Anyone bought a new mattress during lockdown and if so, did you disinfect it before using?

Current mattress really no longer suitable as preventing elderly parent from sleeping - we were planning to replace it just about the time the news of CV broke so didn't, and we've tried a topper which hasn't made any difference. So new mattress coming on Friday but I don't know in current situation if it will be okay just to put the mattress directly on to the bed and make it up as normal, or if I should and would need to disinfect it first and if so, how and with what?

If anyone's been in this situation and can advise, would appreciate it. Thanks.

Mine came wrapped completely in plastic so actual mattress clean

Stuffofawesome I'm expecting mine to come that way too. Whenever I've bought new mattresses they've been wrapped in that quite thick plastic sheeting. Someone in my household queried how would we know if our mattress was old stock or newly-made and therefore possibly handled by others during the process. My DH pointed out that most places have been closed anyway so mattress likely to be already wrapped pre CV. Initially I shrugged off the question but then that uncertainty worm crept in...will it be okay/should I disinfect? Thanks for reassurance.

Sure it will be wrapped and fine.

If you are worried, you could leave the mattress on the bed for 24 hours once wrapping is removed and it will die. It survives longer on hard surfaces, but I assume your mattress is not made of stainless steel!

That is, you don't need to disinfect, you just need to wait.

You’re normally meant to leave brand new mattresses to air for 24 hours after unwrapping them anyway aren’t you?

I orderd a single.for my eldest and it came vacuumed packed in a box. I opened it and left it in the sun outside all day. If your worried I'd jest open it and leave it somewhere for 72 hours.

I bought one for my son. It came double wrapped in polythene and I imagine it was probably inside it for months if not more, so I took the wrapping off and washed my hands really well, then just dettol sprayed the mattress just because we touched it after touching the wrapping. The delivery guys stayed well back - just leaned it up against the side of the house and left.
