Cover soil of any plants with cling film or foil between watering, and ensure that fruit and other food sources are covered too.

Great tip re cling film on soil. I shall have to try this.

You have to get rid of all their food sources. They will come in for a fruit bowl, some house plants, dirty laundry if it has food on it, any spills or mess or open bins. Even a dish sponge with food residue, or the build up of food in the kitchen sink drain. If you have more than the occasional one then there will be a good food source that is particularly attractive, maybe a piece of fruit that rolled free and is now going mouldy some place? Use you nose or follow the flies. If it's just the occasional one try putting the fruit in the fridge and putting some drain cleaner down
