Curtain Cleaning and Dye

I've bought a house this year and am slowly getting around to all the odd jobs that need doing. One of the jobs is a set of curtains that need some work. I have a HUGE window floor to ceiling and wall to wall type thing. The current curtains are nicotine stained and I really don't like the colour but I can't afford to buy new ones due to the size. They are massive so I can't even afford to buy fabric and attempt to make new curtains. I was thinking maybe I could hand wash the current curtains and try to dye them? Anyone tried this before? They are a mid-green colour so I guess I would need to dye a darker colour? I was thinking a blue would be nice but I'm not sure if that would work. I'm not sure if the current curtains are fully cotton (no lables) so not sure if they would even dye. I've been looking at Dylon dies are those any good?
