Are fridge freezers with freezer drawers any good?

I fancy the idea but not sure if they are energy efficient

I have been postponing buying a new fridge as I wanted to get one for the kitchen I dream of but now I have extra people in the house and will have for some time I need to act!

WHat brand or model should I look for?

The swan Retro ones look amazing - but not sure if they are any good (I have only had Swan kettles before now I think)

I've got a Samsung fridge freezer with freezer drawers. I was amazed at how much I could get in it. Previously I'd had shelves with one drawer. Mine has 3 and all large and deep and has plenty of room. I find it easier to clean too.

KatyMac · 23/04/2020 12:47

Thanks I was worried they wouldn't be spaceous

Anyone else got an opinion on these drawers - I appreciate your opinion @TheFormidableMrsC I'd just like a few more people to talk to Smile

I've never not had one with drawers. I don't understand ones without. Never had any problems!

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 25/04/2020 14:17

Mine has drawers. I can fit nearly as much in as I can in a (small) chest freezer and it's easier to find.
Mine has little shelves in the door too.

KatyMac · 25/04/2020 18:49

The freezer drawers open individually with their own separate front more like a chest of drawers than a traditional freezer with drawers behind a door

I must be unlucky. I find mine really annoying and doesn't hold anywhere near the amount I need it to, to the extent that we have bought an additional small freezer which sits on top of the fridge freezer. The fridge part is fine, otherwise we'd get a new one.

We are in a quandry

We sold out Fridge freezer when we sold our old house and we are using a small undercounter fridge & freezer until we canafford a new kitchen

Then Covid happened and DD and her bf moved back in; which combined with them being veggie, me preferring to cook rather than ready meals and 1 shop a week mean the poor fridge and freezer operate a significantly difficult tetris game every shop day....gradually getting better until we eat store cupboard food on the last day

So do I buy a huge FF or (very pretty) huge fridge and huge freezer and then when they leave home again it isn't economic to run them that big? or put up with what we have

Baring in mind we are shielding so we could be 'in' for quite a bit longer

I went for a fridge freezer with a frost free freezer with the largest freezer capacity possible at the time. It's a Samsung and very happy with it.

Frost free freezer is an essential...

3 large drawers that fit loads in.

Ours is a Samsung American style fridge freezer. Best one I've ever had and it's like a tardis. Freezer has shelves and drawers and lots of door storage for ice packs, etc.

KatyMac · 07/05/2020 17:27

Thanks - I still dont know what to buy - I am a bit blocked I think

Ours is cavernous and it’s much easier to find things in drawers than on shelves

Iflyaway · 07/05/2020 17:36

I fancy the idea but not sure if they are energy efficient

But don't you have the Energy Label on all white goods? (I live on the continent).

I've had a Zanussi Spazio for years, 2 big freezer drawers at the bottom with lots of room. I'm well pleased with it.
(Also has two drawers in the bottom of the fridge for veg.).

saraclara · 07/05/2020 17:43

Check the internal capacity when you're researching..it varies wildly between fridge freezers that appear the same size externally.
I've got a Liebherr which had great capacity and was a which magazine best buy when I got it. Not expensive either. There were four of us when I bought it, and now there's only me. But I'm still very glad I went for it. I wouldn't get anything smaller.

saraclara · 07/05/2020 17:48

This is like mine. www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/household-appliances/refrigeration/fridge-freezers/liebherr-cn4213-50-50-fridge-freezer-white-10159669-pdt.html

One that it's compared with at the bottom looks the same but has far less freezer space.

waltzingparrot · 07/05/2020 18:17

I find my drawers hold a lot because even when the draw space is full, you can still seem to fit more on top before closing. Never know what I've got in them on the bottom though 😂

CoxwellHuge · 07/05/2020 18:29

We have a smeg fridge freezer with drawers. It's slightly narrower than the usual American style ones at only 850mm wife but the two freezer drawers hold loads. I love it and wouldn't be without it.

Are fridge freezers with freezer drawers any good?
picklemewalnuts · 07/05/2020 18:35

Your talking about a French style Freezer, I think.

I really wanted one, but they are significantly deeper than an american style, and we couldn't fit it in.
The American ones tend to have a bigger fridge than freezer.

The best freezer is the one that makes best use of your space.

KatyMac · 07/05/2020 20:35

DH has been looking and we now think side by side fridge and freezer would be good about 1.4-1.5m but tbh we can't find hardly anything to buy atm

We were thinking of ones like @CoxwellHuge showed but I don't think it would be big enough
