Cigarette smoke smell mattress :/

I was meant to be moving but it has been postponed with lockdown. Beforehand my brother said I could store some stuff at his. I knew he had started smoking again but my sister used to live with him and said he did it in the garage, but since she moved out he had started smoking in the house. Arrived and could instantly smell the smoke but had nowhere to put my stuff and thought I'd keep the door closed to the spare room. Ended up needing the mattress back and it now stinks of smoke Angry any tips how to eliminate the smell?!

Try the chemically sensitive persons' trick: cover mattress liberally with baking soda. Leave for a day with the heating in that room turned to max. Then hoover up the baking soda. This may work on its own. In addition you can also try lightly sponging the surface with vinegar. However it's possible that neither of these methods will work as the inner part of the mattress is not accessible to the cleaning substances. I'd be furious with your brother though I know that unfortunately he has a right to smoke in his own house.

Thanks I'll try the baking soda first. Yeah I thought it wouldn't be too bad with my stuff in the spare room and the door closed, but when I went to get some stuff the door was open (I've no idea why as he doesn't use the room).

Forgot to say, if you resort to the vinegar, use the transparent stuff, not the brown or otherwise coloured stuff, otherwise it will stain.

if you can carry it outside, leave it in the sun.

You can also spray it with febreze (but not enough to make the padding damp, or it will rot) and let the sun dry it.

I've found in cars that wet cleaning the interior, the smell seems to go as the water dries out.
