Spiders are on the march

Ok so that's me just spotted the first gigantic house spider of the year. We live rurally and are just inundated with those horrid house spiders every year. This year I really REALLY want to deter them. Anyone have any tips? I hear peppermint spray helps? Please please share your tips!!!

Lots of people swear by dotting conkers around in corners, but others say it makes no difference. IMHO it can't hurt to try!

Candyflosscookie · 17/04/2020 22:04

Check for basilisks 🐍

mamalicious3030 · 17/04/2020 22:04

Thanks Maggie. I'll be looking for those when I'm out on my daily exercise!
Any other suggestions?!

Peppermint

Its TOO FUCKING EARLY for them

I saw one last night she was huge I left the light on for the cat to see her and legged it

IdblowJonSnow · 17/04/2020 22:06

I bloody hate spiders. I think you can get pet control in if you're unindated/think you have a nest.
I can confirm that conkers don't work!

TitsalinaBumSquash · 17/04/2020 22:08

We've had loads here. I woke up with on on my fucking eye the other day. I have regular shouts from my son to remove them from the bathroom.
I'm transporting many a 'Mr Skinnylegs' to the bug house in the garden (that's been desolate for over a year)

blueskys72 · 17/04/2020 22:13

There's a spray called Dethlac on Amazon which is supposed to be good.

ThunderR0ad78 · 17/04/2020 22:13

Oh my goodness, Sept-Dec is my worst time of year as I just can't stand them and am constantly on edge! Please don't tell me spider season is getting earlier Shock

MaggieFS · 17/04/2020 22:16

I wonder if the conker thing comes from the timing for them being the same as spider season.

Yes it's way too bloody early, I guess the mild winter hasn't killed many off and now it's warmed up they've all come out?

Moonflower12 · 17/04/2020 22:34

Get a spaniel. They eat them.

madcatladyforever · 17/04/2020 22:39

My cat eats them but she's 19 so I'll soon be needing a new spider eating cat.
I get spider spray off amazon in the big red can they hate it but if you live in the country you will always get them.

madcatladyforever · 17/04/2020 22:41

Oh yes, I go away for a week every year, cat in cattery and get the house fumigated with the smoke bomb thing. It gets rid of a huge residual amount of spiders and other creepy crawlies, they are fine outdoors but no in thank you.
Yjis really works, my last house was infested but after two fumigations I almost never saw them.

mamalicious3030 · 17/04/2020 23:37

Maybe I need to just fumigate the freaking house then.
I wondered if maybe we have a nest. God the thought gives me the willies!!!

mamalicious3030 · 17/04/2020 23:38

I'll check out the spider can. Failing that maybe I should just get a cat too!!

mamalicious3030 · 17/04/2020 23:40

I've noticed a lot of wee spiders making webs on our windows. Maybe they are put early this year. I hate them. Sad

mamalicious3030 · 17/04/2020 23:42

Is it this spray?

I had my washing outside yesterday and DH brought it in before he went to bed and said that he had to stand there and get off a lot of tiny tiny spiders from the washing, especially the towels. As I was folding the washing to put in the basket to take upstairs in the morning, I found at least another 30 on there..mainly all hidden in the towels Confused so tiny though!!

SpyApp · 17/04/2020 23:52

Tiny for now....Grin

SpyApp · 17/04/2020 23:55

Dethlac comes in a greeny yellow tin. I think Raid comes in a red tin. I've always sworn by Dethlac but it wasn't as effective last year so maybe they're building up resistance.

terri65 · 17/04/2020 23:57

@SpyApp don't say that! Just makes me think of all the washing I've had out this past few weeks and put away without even checking. All yesterday's washing was white so easier to see the tiny bastards Confused

Heaviestdirtyestsoul · 18/04/2020 00:00

A nest? An actual nest? Multiple spiders? Are we talking tens? Hundreds?

OhMy05 · 18/04/2020 00:00

The red Raid works better than that spider spray OP. Any raid works n ok them I’ve noticed , even the fly and wasp one. I reckon they’re all the same just different colour canisters.

Bohomie · 18/04/2020 00:00

We had a massive one here earlier. Fast as fuck too.

SpyApp · 18/04/2020 00:07

My son claimed a massive one was on his pillow earlier in the week. I didn't believe him because it's the wrong time of year. Going by this thread I owe him an apology.
