How can I make my rug smell fresher?

I got a bargain rug at a car boot sale yesterday, but now that it is at home it smells of dog ! I have been spraying it with febreze but to no avail. Is there a product that will freshen it up a bit? It looks immaculate, it is just that the smell is a bit offputting. No wonder it was so cheap

Can you hang it up outside in the fresh air for a couple of days? I'm sure this would help!!

Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda on it and hoover hoover hoover then hang it outside, beat it and then leave it at least overnight to air.

I am in a first floor flat with no garden! Do you think that would help though? I am sure I could ask a friend to do it for me
