Bedroom always smells 'stale'

We sleep with our windows open all year round and leave them open during the day. I wash the bedsheets once a week and use candles (which help temporarily) and have a reed diffuser. I shake down the pillows and duvet every morning. What am I doing wrong?

are you turning the mattresses?
washing pillows/duvets?

Finewine1976 · 18/03/2020 19:17

Is it the carpets

catwithnohat · 18/03/2020 19:19

@finewine I think carpets too.... OP give them a steamclean if you can.

eeyoredebbie · 18/03/2020 19:21

Do you have any pets?

Have you pulled the bed out and moved furniture?

We had a stale smell for a day and found a stain on bottom of duvet but that sort of thing could be hidden

keepingbees · 18/03/2020 19:23

Lots of clutter can make a room smell stale if air can't circulate.
Also you could try those damp traps you get from the pound shop, they work really well.

GrumpyHoonMain · 18/03/2020 19:24

Dusting can help.

NoNameNoGame · 18/03/2020 19:58

Moved here 2 years ago.

Newly painted walls and brand new carpet.

I dust and hoover regularly.

No shoes or slippers allowed upstairs. I wash the pillows and air the duvet occasionally.

The room is pretty minimal.

We have a 2 year old Simba mattress. Can that be turned?

Could it be something under the carpet? Manky underlay or damp coming from somewhere?

NoNameNoGame · 18/03/2020 21:06

It's not a damp smell. More like husbands morning breath and farts!

OP posts:
Dontforgetyourbrolly · 18/03/2020 21:09

A farty smell can often be a dead rodent. Sorry !

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 18/03/2020 21:10

In the wall cavity or under the floor boards :(

SoShere · 18/03/2020 21:11

Bicarb the carpet

damnthatanxiety · 18/03/2020 21:16

Morning breath and farts 🤣

justasking111 · 18/03/2020 21:18

A dead mouse somewhere. We had one the cat brought in, it crawled under the bed and died. Took a while to find it.

Elieza · 18/03/2020 21:28

It’s my damp towels in the laundry basket that stink out the room.

I’ve since found if I leave the most recent used towel spread over it to dry overnight and then dump it inside the basket in the morning, that the problem is resolved. Grin

NoNameNoGame · 18/03/2020 21:39

@SoShere thanks I will give that a go and see how I get on.

Eek what colour is your carpet. My friend ruined a carpet like this once.

NoNameNoGame · 19/03/2020 09:15

It's pale grey!

mumwon · 19/03/2020 09:20

make him use mouth wash at night! & give him peppermint tea (if you don't mind the smell of recycled peppermint!

woodencoffeetable · 19/03/2020 09:24

do you have curtains? if yes, wash them.

soupforbrains · 19/03/2020 09:44

Do you make the bed as soon as you get up?

A lot of people who are good/organised with housework and tidiness do but actually it's better to allow the sheets and mattress to air for a few hours before covering them over with the duvet. it's something to do with the bacteria in the sheets/mattress and stuff.

inmyshoos · 19/03/2020 09:46

Ewww.... LTB Grin.... Joking... Obviously.

NoNameNoGame · 19/03/2020 17:09

I actually shake the whole duvet and lay it back to allow it to air and also shake the pillows. The curtains are 18 months old.

I think I'm going to try steam clean the chenille headboard, flip the mattress and baking soda the carpet.

If this doesn't work, the DH has to go! 😂

Have you got pets? You could buy one of those ultraviolet torches that show up urine for two quid on eBay. I didn’t think my cat was up to anything and then I bought a torch and found she had been!!!

NoNameNoGame · 20/03/2020 10:18

No pets. No kids.

It is literally a stale, stuffy smell as if we never open the windows.
