Washing machine help

Fairly new washing machine, about 7 months old but my washing just doesn't come out smelling fresh!
Use a combo of lenor and either surf or bold. It just doesn't smell fresh when it comes out the washing machine - did go through a phase where it smelt like weed but used dettol washing machine cleaner and it stopped. My boyfriend said it smells fine but it just doesn't smell nice to me? Any advice?

Scrap the fabric softener, switch to an own brand capsule. Empty it as soon as the cycle ends. Leave the door ajar between washes.

Do the clothes go in smelling of weed? If you've cleaned the machine and are happy that it's not from that, try replacing fabric conditioner with white vinegar. It's a good deodoriser (and won't reduce absorbance of towels etc..) for both clothes and the machine.

Have you cleaned the machine itself?
Pop it on the highest temp and run it (empty)
You can add some specific machine cleaning powder that's available at most supermarkets, I use Dr Beckham/ becknam? 🧐
Or a capful of bleach works too, but don't overdo it.

Sorry, just reread your last paragraph. If it's clean I don't know what to suggest.

Is the rubber rim clean and doesn't have anything nasty stuck in it. How about the drain?

Shortandsweet20 · 08/03/2020 20:43

No, clothes don't go in smelling like weed. It's only happened a few times, when my boyfriend has left a load in for like half an hour after it's finished so that could be that?

Will try swapping detergent. I use the exact same combo as my mom but her washing always smells lovely! I'll check the rim as sometimes it can get dog hair in it!

Is it draining the water properly? I had this when the drain hose wasn't high up enough and the dirty water wasn't being siphoned off so it was just washing in the same water.

My clothes smelt fusty and like wee until I figured it out.

Shortandsweet20 · 08/03/2020 20:56

@angelika321 haven't thought of that! I am new to all of this! How would I check that?

Basically the ribbed waste pipe needs to go up to the height of the top of the machine before going down to the drain. You can buy a U shaped plastic guide to position the hose in the correct place.

You can get a gungey build up of detergent and softener.

Try a very hot wash with just a good cupful of soda crystals in the drum, no detergent. I did that recently and was amazed at how much foam there was. Repeated it, and there was still quite a bit.

I now use half a cup of soda crystals with every wash (to clean and soften water) and half the amount of powder detergent I would have used (had used pods for quite a while, which didn’t help) to prevent another build up. Washing is just as clean. No softener any more, either - whatever is in it apparently does cause gunge to build up.
