My dishwasher smells nasty in mid-cycle...

It's knocking on a bit but still cleans the dishes and they come out shiny and sweet smelling. But it chucks out a horrid pong when it's got hot in mid cycle.. hard to describe, but I hate it.. it's a sort of rotten, warm smell IYSWIM...

I have got a dishwasher freshener in the bottom of it and have put it through cleaning cycles to no avail... any ideas?

Is there something nasty lurking in the filter?

ShinyHappySchmooo · 07/09/2007 10:23

Where is the filter?

Mines an old model but at the bottom there is a plastic grid with a plug hole type thing with a little basket in it. You can twist it and pull it out, it catches any large pieces of food or other foreign bodies. I usually clean it out every couple of weeks. it can ge a bot grim otherwise. Go and have a poke about and see what you find.

ShinyHappySchmooo · 07/09/2007 10:28

Mine doesn't have that.. the only filter thing I can see is the one in the bottom of the machine, a sort of netted tube thing, that I pull out every day and rinse. Should there be another filter?

No that sounds like the thing I meant - and am now ashamed that I only rinse it out every two weeks.

Is it because your sense of smell is heightened mid-cycle by all the hormomes?

ShinyHappySchmooo · 07/09/2007 10:38

Oh we use ours so much though Megalegs, it always need emptying! [worries about carbon footprint]

PMSL Hathor.. I thought that when I typed it.. that I should perhaps differentiate between mine and my DW's "mid cycle"!

That is dishwasher.. not darling wife! LOL.. the plot thickens...

Maybe a blocked pipe? We live in a hard water area and my mum's old dishwasher was blocked with limescale and fat (mmm) which was quite whiffy when the plumber took it apart.

ShinyHappySchmooo · 07/09/2007 10:43

Yes our water is hard...

Eeek.. blocked pipe beyond me.. I am just a girl.. I only know about dollies and horses and stuff...

I'll add it to DH's list [sigh] (he claims not to be able to smell it but think this is so he doesn't have to do anything about it! Friend's children said last weekend "what's that stink in the kitchen?!" )
