Bugs in the flour!!

Has anyone had a recurring problem with bugs in your flour?!
I thought I had solved the problem, flour in a metal container inside a plastic bag, same with icing sugar etc. A deep clean after the last time I found them, bay leaves in the cupboard and it's meant to dissuade them.
I've just bloody found them in 2 unopened bags of flour (not in a container) so they must still be lurking. I'm at the end of my tether!!

I had weevils in my self raising flour last week. Never had them before. I just got on with making my cookies, poured out the recommended amount of flour and used a sifter to sift the flour into the mixture, it also sifted the weevils out so none went directly into the cookie mix. I probably sifted out about 16 of them in total. The cookies were fine, we all ate them up. I read they were completely harmless and we didn't suffer any ill effects, though DM refused to eat any cookies. Grin

Will also add, it was the first time I've had them, and like a PP, it was Aldi flour I was using. Nothing else in the cupboard appears to be affected though I haven't had anything else out for a proper inspection yet.

Weevils are tiny! They'd drop through a sif, wouldn't they?

LemonFrenzy · 08/03/2020 22:34

Why the freezer? Fridge is fine. I read somewhere that is the advice of some chefs to put opened ones in the fridge.

SpoonBlender · 08/03/2020 23:44

Because a freezer kills the bugs, while a fridge just slows them down!

Jessie9323 · 09/03/2020 07:12

Definitely tiny bugs that wouldn't have been caught by a sieve! And definitely not maggots haha.

WTH bugs in flour? Mine are going in the bin today? I have some opened in under cupboard with just a peg on but some have been there for months! How do you know if there's bugs in the flour? Can you see them?

PeraltasWife · 09/03/2020 11:02

What fresh hell is this?? Never knew flour bugs were even a thing! Thats me never baking again!

KittenVsBox · 09/03/2020 11:14

Yes, kissme it is blatantly obvious when you have critters in your flour. You can see them. It's not common in the UK.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 09/03/2020 11:17

It’s obvious if you look carefully. They crawl up the paper in the bag. I found some at the bottom of the dry lentils Tupperware last week. That was a grim discovery.

Jessie9323 · 09/03/2020 16:46

They are obvious when you have them, they make white flour look like wholewheat haha. But they can spread to cardboard containers in the cupboards etc

Well I know now and will be checking Thanks for the info

Freeze it, then sieve the little corpses out. AFAIK they’re not at all dangerous to health, they don’t carry any germs.

Had to do this all the time when living in hot climates. Wouldn’t expect to have to do it here, though!
