Smelly washing

Whenever I put a dark wash load on it comes out smelling moldy. I have tried less clothes in the drum/more powder and softener and I do an empty boil wash once a week. This doesn’t happen to lights or whites they smell of the powder and look clean. What’s going on?

Try adding a capful of Zoflora linen scent into the main wash. It kills any stinky bacteria.

Fifilafrog · 19/02/2020 10:46

No advice I'm afraid but I'm placemarking as I get this too! Only in dark washes though! It's almost as if there's something in the black dyes that smells odd? Other wash loads come out super fresh, just not the darks. Drives me up the wall!

Fifilafrog · 19/02/2020 10:47

Millie , I have tried zig LG lots, detail etc. Nothing works?

woodencoffeetable · 19/02/2020 10:50

do you wash at a low temperature?
is the smell musty or rather the smell of dye?

HappyAsASandboy · 19/02/2020 10:51

Are you using the same powder or a different one?

JenNtonic · 19/02/2020 10:54

Do a hot "maintenance wash". Some bicarbonate and white vinegar in the drum AND the drawer, then set to the hottest wash (whilst it's empty) xx

Ifonly86 · 19/02/2020 11:09

Thanks all, it’s the same powder and softener as I usually use, it does smell musty yes but there’s nothing dirty or sweaty just every day clothing. I wash at 40, I tried a 60 and it didn’t make a difference. I’ve used machine cleaner and I always do a hot wash and still nothing so I assume it’s the clothes?

I will try the zoflora thanks

You could run the machine empty on hottest wash and add bicarbonate of soda and vinegar to the detergent drawer that will get rid of smells.

RandomUsernameHere · 19/02/2020 16:07

Have you tried leaving the door open when the machine is not in use? Maybe it needs to dry out properly.

Ifonly86 · 19/02/2020 17:47

The door is always open when it’s not in use, I have done a full clean of pipes, drawer etc currently on a 90 wash with zoflora so we’ll see if that helps. Thanks for all the tips

Our dark loads tend to contain things like jeans, trousers etc which are heavier for the same volume in the drum. I find putting less in these washes helps. Also these things tend to retain more water than say, t-shirts, sheets etc which make up the bulk of my lighter colour loads. I wonder whether it's this extra water that's making the clothes a bit smellier.

Put Dettol laundry cleanser in the fabric conditioner drawer when you do a dark wash. It will kill the bacteria.

beckyy · 19/02/2020 18:10

Agree with above poster,Dettol is good.

Fifilafrog · 19/02/2020 18:16

I honestly don’t think it’s a bacteria thing. It doesn’t have “that” smell. I’m convinced it’s something to do with the dyes used in some black (and only black) clothes. Seems to be mostly black jeans from what I can make out as when you sniff each individual item, that’s what has the strongest smell (the rest seems to just get lightly contaminated with the smell). Also, the smell seems to disappear once dry which it doesn’t when something is mildewed.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 19/02/2020 18:46

If your machine has a self clean function run that with a drop of bleach in it.

Threelionsandalioness · 19/02/2020 18:53

Please forgive me if you've tried this... But have you cleaned the filter?
I used two dishwasher tablets put machine on a 60 wash...empty machine of course (As I was having the same problem months ago) and I've never had the smell again. I do this once every couple of a weeks.
I tried everything and this is the only thing that worked good luck op x

kevintheorangecarrot · 19/02/2020 20:16

Use dettol laundry cleaner

milliefiori · 20/02/2020 23:28

@Fifilafrog and OP. I think you are right - there is something in black dyes that just reeks like mould. I used to notice it years ago but haven't since I put Zoflora in with every single wash. But I also haven't bought black jeans for ages.

Fifi - do you put a capful of Zoflora into the main wash every single time? That's what stopped it fo rme.

Ifonly86 · 22/02/2020 17:50

The zoflora fixed it thanks all Smile
