Full bedside table

Helplorditsahardlife · 15/02/2020 11:04

My bedside table is always full of things no matter how much I try to clear it. I am a mature full-time single mother of 2 kids (age 8 &4). I always like to have things that I might need handy & not have to get up etc. But I am sure there people like myself who Dont have their bedside table this full. See the pictures attached. I'm being unreasonable? I am just curious that's all.

Why are the majority of those things out and not in the drawers? I have similar things in mine as need them to hand, but they are in-not on!

And if you bought bedside tables without drawers then you only have yourself to blame Smile

Helplorditsahardlife · 15/02/2020 20:33

@Lalala205 yes it's a my old blackberry I found inside the drawer a few days ago and switched on to check my old pictures & still checking to admire my son’s baby pictures.

@Caspianberg there is only 1 vitamin bottle on there. I think u are mistaking the Apple juice & buscopan which I used this morning there for vitamins.

@Pegsinarow I use to have a carafe there but removed it as with my bottle of water, I Dont need to refill- I bring a fresh bottle upstairs ones I finish one every 2 to 3 days.

@BuddhaAtSea yes, exactly, I am very very busy and its all very tiring so I need somethings close by.

@LesLavandes- Rank???

@Caspianberg yes, lots of pens because I have & get loads of pens and I tend to put them in there instead of taking pen(s) all the way down stairs to the study when I am changing my handbags which I do sitting next to my bedside.

The bedside table is an Ikea one with drawers (I wonder y everyone is assuming it hasn't got drawers) which is filled with things- books, medicines, documents etc. I have a few more books stacked nicely beside the bedside table. Got my note pad and pens to make notes, my Bible, book/page makers for when I'm reading, lip balms, nail file, nail clipper, landline extension (hardly used), Apple watch charging on the corner of the side table, a box of tissues and perfume which is not normally there.

I do always come upstairs with a fresh glass every evening and a cup of tea.

But I love the fact that I do not need to get up to get things that I need once I'm in bed as my life is too busy.

The top drawer of my bedside table holds a lot of the bits.

I couldn't sleep well next to a big pile of clutter.

Mainly because the cat would walk over it and knock it off. Grin

BirdieFriendBadge · 15/02/2020 20:51

Rank I thought was a little unkind.

And then you said you have nail clippers/file to use in bed.

Sorry OP but that is rank.

Also you found the blackberry days ago and it's still piled there. How's the rest of your house? Are you a bit of a hoarder as that would be my guess from this photo?

Why can't some of those things be in the drawers if it has them? What's in the drawers?

Helplorditsahardlife · 15/02/2020 22:01

@BirdieFriendBadge wow yes there is a lot on my bedside but the rest of my house is very clean, tidy & organised - never jump into conclusions. As for nail clipper, I am guessing you Dont know nail clippers have other uses do you? Even if I use it to cut nails, do you think and just assume that I would allow it to fly everywhere or put clipped nails on the bedside table? Btw, I have my pedicure & manicure done at the salon. Also, nail file is to sort out that slightly chipped nail that can/might snag tights while seated on the bed to wear them some mornings. Also, I am not a hoarder. Why are People so quick to assume & him jump into conclusions?

Fortunately, I haven't got any pets that might knock things on bedside down. & luckily, I sleep well because I don't get to sleep till late from reading/studying or writing several 5,000-word essays with deadlines close together so I finally lie down, I am tired and fall asleep quick.

This is normal, isn't it? I tidy mine and it looks like that a day later, they are things I use when I'm in bed! You could maybe lose the deodorant. Pills, lip balms in a drawer?

Twillow · 15/02/2020 22:06

@BirdieFriendBadge What on earth is rank about cutting your nails in/near bed? Where else would you sit to do it?

Parkandride · 15/02/2020 22:09

That stresses me out a bit!
I have lamp, book, lip balm.
There's various shite in the drawer beneath, hand cream, meds etc but at least I can't see it.

ChippyMinton · 15/02/2020 22:11

Perfectly normal. That’s what a beside table is for.

lilgreen · 15/02/2020 22:15

Mine has a lamp, my book, a mug either full or empty, my makeup, my reading glasses. The drawer underneath has all my face creams etc

BirdieFriendBadge · 15/02/2020 22:15

That's why I asked. My assumption was incorrect.

I apologise for that and didn't mean to upset you.

My aunt is a hoarder. And she would totally find an old phone and then it would stay out somewhere it doesn't belong.

My telephone table in the living room is my version of your bedside. Currently has glasses and post on it. Starts the day clear but never ends that way.

I'm very grossed with nail clippings. (My dad used to leave them all over the place - once had some in a cup of tea as I didn't notice he'd left clippings on the kitchen side!) so they are cut in the bathroom for me!

Again. My issue. Not yours. X

Grandmi · 15/02/2020 22:18

Haha,,,I have now got up and cleared my bedside table and I can sleep now !!

Helplorditsahardlife · 15/02/2020 22:21

@Twillow exactly my thoughts. But, there isn't any deodorant on my bedside table. Perhaps you mistaking the vitamin for a deodorant. That is normally on my dressing table.

Helplorditsahardlife · 15/02/2020 22:23

There is a lot on my bedside table but I find it convenient as they are things I need and want to have quick and easy access to. I would love a clear bedside table but wouldn't trade the convenience I have now for a clear table. I am extremely busy and the things on my table make my life & work easier.

I am

  1. a single mother of 2 young kids
  2. full-time postgrad student
  3. I run my own very small company
  4. I help/work for my parents in running their business.

I am not a tidy person, but I couldn't sleep next to all that. Mine has a lamp, small pile of books and a wireless phone charger. It has drawers, which have more books and emergency emollient in case of midnight rashes. But then I don't spend any time in bed other than to sleep - obvs with a quick read beforehand.

Twillow · 15/02/2020 22:27

The slanty top thing -I thought it was deodorant. Also what is the ladybird?

CointreauVersial · 15/02/2020 22:27

My bedside table has my alarm clock, tissues and glass of water. These are the ONLY things I would ever need during the night.

Then I have a drawer underneath for things like handcream, lip balm, books/magazines, which are things I might use once IN bed, before I go too sleep. These are generally too clutter-y to leave out.

I cannot see any reason why I would need pens, post-its, apple juice, pills, nail clippers etc. next to my bed - these are all useful things, sure, but not once you are in bed! I couldn't bear all that clutter, personally.

DailyKegelReminder · 15/02/2020 22:35

This Is why I dont have a bed side table. My bottle of water sits by my bed and I take it down everyday and my phone charges on the window sill.

My hallway cabinet on the other hand is full of the most random stuff, from screwdrivers to Tupperware Blush

JKScot4 · 15/02/2020 22:45

Too cluttered for me, I’ve got a lamp, radio, coaster, tissues.
Being busy isn’t an excuse to be messy, you say you fall asleep quickly so why the need for all that crap?
Think you need a desk or some storage baskets.

Helplorditsahardlife · 15/02/2020 22:56

@DailyKegelReminder lol, strangely enough, I would not be able to cope with my window being full like yours. I would not be able to rest if anything in the rest of the house is out of place. Everything in the house is well organised and a sharp contrast to my bedside table.

Yes, I know my bedside is full but then the things on there are the things I use every night with my uni study, running a company etc. + I only study & do paperwork once kids are in bed sleeping so that I can concentrate & no one to disturb me hence all the pens, post-it notes etc.

Nat6999 · 15/02/2020 23:00

I have a basket that holds my odds & ends on my bedside table, saves things getting knocked off if I grope for a drink in the middle of the night, it has my spare e cig mod with batteries on charge, my moisturiser, baby wipes, eye drops & gel, some painkillers, a brush & comb, my tablet, spare earplugs, juice for my e cig, my tyrosine tablets to remind me to take as soon as I wake up. This leaves enough room for my drinks bottle & inhaler. All my medication is in a plastic box tucked under the edge of my bed (I'm disabled & take a lot of medication) it is easy for me to grab what I need as I take most meds at night

TheHagOnTheHill · 15/02/2020 23:05

I have a lamp, coaster, soap stone container my DD got me for my most worn earrings, glasses, phone at night.
On shelf below several books, kindle, bits of important paper work ejected from my bag that night.
Around and about, things that have fallen off the table and collect dust and really need clearing and I say that everytimeI hoover(so not that often)and do it only if needed.

happymummy12345 · 15/02/2020 23:10

I have a lamp, ds's monitor, and at night my phone and a bottle of water. Did have a clock but it broke and just use my phone for the time most remember to activate the night mode thing so the screen isn't extremely bright in the middle of the night.
Go to bed early hours of the morning and wake up several times during what's left of the night

Bbq1 · 15/02/2020 23:12

Bedside table atm - lamp, clock radio 3 teddy ornaments, wonderwoman push light, Wonderwoman doll, another ornament, sponge, stress valley, coaster, lipbalm, 2 types of hand cream, cross.
Wow, reading that back what a wacky sounding bedside table that sounds! It all reflects me tho. I have a drawer full of items which I regularly sort and tidy. Also have a space underneath the drawer where all my books to read are stored.

Helplorditsahardlife · 15/02/2020 23:14

@JKScot4 I would not want a desk in my room as I have enough furniture with a bed, side tables & dressing table.

Although I would prefer to have a clear bedside table like the rest of my house but it is not just possible with all the work I do at night. Even though I would be very restless if for instance my livingroom as anything out of place. I have programmed myself to see my bedside’s current state as necessary for my convince for the busy life I have.
