Hob - Ceramic or Gas?

Hopefully will be moving to new house in a few weeks and the kitchen will need gutting. First time ever I get to choose my own kitchen Hobs - I have only ever used gas but I do find them tricky to clean - ceramic I have only ever used on holiday - easy to clean, look good and seemed to work well. Thoughts??

Gas. I like to cook and gas allows me to control the heat better.

MrsMills · 31/08/2007 13:56

Have you considered an induction hob?

That's what I'll be spending my weeekend doing, oh joy of joys.

Cloudhopper · 31/08/2007 13:56

Gas. We had no gas plumbing and couldn't be bothered to sort it out, so bought an electric cooker.

It is fine, but gas is much easier to control and cook with. Electric, no matter how fast, is still slower to respond.

Now ovens, that is another thing altogether. Go for fan assisted electric - more even heat distribution and drier.

MamaG · 31/08/2007 13:57

gas

RGPargy · 31/08/2007 13:57

Gas. Instant flame, can be controlled instantly, if you need to turn it down, it's instant etc etc.

Ceramic - Slow to heat, slow to get cold, if you need to turn it down it'll take a while to get cooler etc etc blah blah blah

gas for me too - with fan electric oven.

PanicPants · 31/08/2007 14:00

Ceramic!!

I had gas for years and like you found them a pain to clean. Have had our ceramic hob for about 6 months now and love it. I find it heats as quickly (If not more than) gas, easy to clean and looks much tidier.

But I'm in the minority!

NappyChange · 31/08/2007 14:03

We have a fan - assisted elec oven now and am happy with that. Induction, I seem to read that some saucepans can't be used with it and I am bound to have those particular pots and buggar it up. Like the way ceramic blends into the worktop and they really do look easier to clean.

Induction ceramic is wonderful. But you need to have pans that a magnet sticks too on the bottom. I love mine, so sensitive. Better than gas and easy peasy to clean.

i've just decided to go for an induction hob over gas. very safe, you don't get the condensation gas produces, easy to clean, differing reports on speed - some say faster than gas, others slightly slower. and i saw heston blumenthal uses them in his kitchen / lab thingy. can't be that bad then eh?

ceramic cos of cleaning

gas pita

Whooosh · 31/08/2007 18:48

Gas is a pain in the arse to clean-full stop.

Induction is the way to go-just as controllable but looka better and is easier to clean.

Yes,you may have to buy new saucepans but I have had mine 4yrs now and love it.

Rantmum · 31/08/2007 18:52

I would pick ceramic for cleanability, my MIL has it in her flat and it is great for a quick wipe over.

Having said that, as a person who uses the hob ALOT, because my dh and I both enjoy cooking and tend to cook meals from scratch, I much prefer gas for temperature control. You can lower or increase the heat and ir responds almost straight away - not so with ceramic!

MaeWest · 31/08/2007 18:54

We have a ceramic hob (gas not an option as we're not plumbed in) and it is v easy to clean. We did have to get rid of some of our older pans e.g our cast iron wok, but I'm pretty pleased with it. Also we have one ring that is halogen, which heats up v quickly. Getting rid of old pans also freed up more room in the cupboards!

Deffo gas. Quick heat, quick cool, safer for kids.

Frizbe · 31/08/2007 23:30

Gas

nappyaddict · 01/09/2007 00:08

you want a gas hob with fan electric oven

nappyaddict · 01/09/2007 00:11

oooh i've not heard of this induction thingy. what's the difference between that and ceramic?

BalletMum · 01/09/2007 09:21

Induction heats up the pan which in turn heats up the food. When you take the pan off it is not hot to touch just warm (on mine - don't anyone burn yourself[sceptical]) This makes it really easy to clean as you can wipe it straight away rather than food burning etc.

Ceramic and halogen is heat that you place a pan over IYSWIM - please note I am no expert

Whooosh · 01/09/2007 09:39

Induction is as quick to heat and as controllable as gas.It works on magnetic energy and it wil not stay on or retain heat once a pan is removed.
