Washing underwear on quick wash?

Katie1945 · 21/01/2020 16:41

I like to wash underwear and tights separately but it seems such a waste putting on a whole wash when I can only fill the machine half full (sometimes less).

I’ve had a look in the manual and my machine doesn’t have a half load unfortunately, but the quick washes are listed as only being able to half fill the machine. The problem is the quick washes say they are only for lightly soiled garments and the temperature only goes to about 30 or 40. Sad

I don’t think underwear would get properly clean on a wash for lightly soiled stuff on a low temp. So I don’t know whether to try using the light wash or if to just run the full wash just for half a load. It just seems such a waste of water/energy.

Any advice?

I think underwear beads to be done on at least 40 unless you’re adding the dettol wash stuff.

  • needs!!
Tuliptulip · 21/01/2020 16:44

Why do the underwear/tights need to be washed separately?

Mrsjayy · 21/01/2020 16:44

I wash pants and socks with towels on a 40 saves half loads

Apolloanddaphne · 21/01/2020 16:45

It is s such a waste washing these things separately. Mine goes into lights and darks and all clothing is washed together at either 30 or 40 degrees.. How soiled can your underwear be? I think they mean things like muddy football kit etc.

Eckhart · 21/01/2020 16:45

Ask all your neighbours if they have any pants that need washing so you can fill the machine.

MyEnormousTurnip · 21/01/2020 16:48

I wash everything apart from towels and bedding at 30 and we’re all surviving. And have clean underwear. What do you think will happen?

Mrsjayy · 21/01/2020 16:48

@Eckhart 😂

Wildorchidz · 21/01/2020 16:49

Ask all your neighbours if they have any pants that need washing so you can fill the machine.

Love it !!!

homemadecommunistrussia · 21/01/2020 16:50

Obviously, you will die if you wear knickers washed at less than 60C!Shock

Wildorchidz · 21/01/2020 16:50

I put everything in together so that machine is full. Wash at 30 or 40. Half the amount of power recommended. Our clothes are clean.

I wash underwear with its corresponding colour e.g. black stuff in a dark wash, white with white, other colours in a mixed colour wash. Normally washed at 40 degrees

DramaAlpaca · 21/01/2020 16:54

I'm not seeing the problem here. A quick wash on 40 is fine for underwear.

BinkyBam · 21/01/2020 16:54

I wonder if I'm missing something here? All my families underwear just goes into which ever colour fits?

Unless they're a specific material that cannot go on a standard wash? I'm intrigued to know what I'm missing!

OccasionalNachos · 21/01/2020 16:54

Put in with towels/sheets. I’m with you OP, underwear needs higher temps!

Reallybadidea · 21/01/2020 16:56

I wouldn't wash my underwear in the same load as tea towels, but otherwise I don't see the need to wash them either separately or on hot. Assuming you don't lick your clothes, what is the danger of washing your underthings along with everything else at 30C?

GrannyBags · 21/01/2020 16:58

What temp should undies be washed at? All mine goes in with the corresponding colours on a normal 40 wash.
Mind you, already discovered I’m a scummy cow as I don’t wash my duvet/pjs after every use!

Eckhart · 21/01/2020 16:58

Why does underwear need higher temps? What on earth are people getting on their pants?

dementedpixie · 21/01/2020 16:59

I'm not ruining my underwear by washing it at high temperature. 40 degrees is plenty hot enough

Katie1945 · 21/01/2020 17:00

I should clarify, I like to tumble dry the underwear (always raining here and the house is damp). Most of my clothes can’t tumbler dry, that’s why I separate them.

I use a 40 quick wash a lot-including knickers.

I do use napisan in most of my washes and that kills germs etc at 40 degrees. Just makes me feel better really

Sadiee88 · 21/01/2020 17:02

60c wash them with towels/bedding.

thrree · 21/01/2020 17:03

Not sure about your machine op but I do underwear separately and the machine automatically accounts for it being a lighter load and adjusts the time accordingly.
If not try half load, be generous on the detergent and get something like dettol (own brands just as good).

itsboiledeggsagain · 21/01/2020 17:03

Is your machine not one that clean things?

Do you have a different machine for all types of washing?

We put everything in one machine here, I sometimes wash it all together at 40. Sometimes I separate to 60. All my sons pants are dark so go at 40. He poos in them all the time. My washing machine cleans them.
