Vinegar as a cleaner, what about the smell?

I swapped from shower gel to bar soap about a ago and it has caused soap scum build up which is hard to remove with my normal bathroom cleaner. I found a recipe for a cleaner using vinegar, water and washing up liquid. It's amazing at cleaning and I prefer the idea of not using loads of chemicals in bought stuff. But the vinegar stinks and the smell lasts a few hours. Can I add essential oil or something to help drown out the vinegar?

I find peppermint essential oil works well.

Thanks Cynderella I wasn't sure if I could use oil or if it would mess up the cleaning ability. I assume it's only a couple of drops?

Have you used white vinegar or malt vinegar like you might put on chips? I find the white vinegar smells initially but goes away very quickly.

Quite a few drops needed!

I use white vinegar mixed with washing up liquid, and yes, the smell does disappear, but it's very strong in a small cloakroom!

I've used white vinegar, it's quite a small bathroom so the smell lingered for a few hours. I want to persevere as the bathroom has never looked so sparkling. Grin

I'm not actually as bothered about the smell as the rest of the family who were really moaning.

Use lemon juice instead. Stronger cleaning action, so use less. And lovely smell.

Thanks GladAllOver, will try that too.

I use essential oils in vinegar cleaners but the smell is still there a bit, we just open doors and windows whilst cleaning and it drifts out (we have windowless bathrooms so also turn fans on for a bit) prefer vinegar to smell of cleaning chemicals!! Once it's all done I spray some essential oil mists or light some scented candles/top up the defuser reeds.
