DH and I are renovating a house and are trying to decide where the lighting above our stairs should go.

DH thinks it should be directly over the stairs. I can't see practically how you would change the lightbulbs.

I think it should be reachable from the top landing so as to change lightbulbs. So kind of just over the landing banister if that makes sense.

Where is your lighting and how do you change the bulbs?

Our lights are above the landing

we have at top of stairs and also every 3 treads - on the wall. iykwim. low level stair lighting.

MyTwopenceworth · 24/08/2007 17:52

We've got one at the bottom of the stairs and one on the top landing.

The lights on the landing do they cast enough light onto the stairs?

Dh's argument is that the stairs need to be lit up whereas I feel that a light on the top landing would be sufficient.

We have a light on the landing with an uplighter though are hoping to change it to 3 spots when hubby gets round to it and we have this light at the bottom of the stairs.

Agree with you about changing bulbs.

ours are on the top landing too, remember you'll probably have to change them alone, in the winter because they always blow at the most inconvenient time

My stairs are very bright. White ceiling and cream walls help too. Mirror at the bottom of the stairs reflects light back up.

how about little halogen lights set in the ceiling going from top to bottom on the stairs, with more set along the landing ? it looks lovely

We've got this double height dooda, with a socking great big chandelier hanging in an impossible place. It's on quite a long chain thing so we stand upstairs on the landing and lean over with a big umbrella to hook it across. I kid you not.
