I cleaned it yesterday with as mop and bucket with soda crystals diluted in hot water.

The floor is light grey tiles with very dark grey, almost black, grouting.

The tiles are now covered in a dark grey mist and I've cleaned them again today, by hand, and the cloths are still coming up black.

Have the soda crystals damaged the grout? I've made a big mistake haven't I? Any ideas what I do now please?

TIA

or have I taken some top layer of the tiles?

Sounds luke you've stripped the top layer off the tiles. Why did you use soda crystals for washing a tiled floor ? They are for laundry softener and limescale removal Hmm

What are the tiles made of?

Soda crystals are for more than just laundry and limescale as they are good for degreasing and cleaning. You maybe used too strong a solution for the type of floor you have. The dripak website suggests liquid soap flakes for more gentle cleaning

Don't panic.
Wash it again. Sofa crystals can leave a residue and it may be that. I use them to clean my job, and often need to rinse several times.

Thanks all
I've today taken delivery of a steam cleaner so will have a go with that tomorrow. Yesterday I did the floor by hand with just a damp cloth, the old fashioned way on my hands and knees, twice. it was back breaking but it does look better.
Still not quite right though. And the amtico wood effect in the lounge and hallway is all streaky and smeary still. And that's after two goes with the e cloth mop and water.
I'm putting the soda crystals back with the laundry stuff Blush
