Help! We've ruined our carpet

We moved into our house a year ago and the people before us clearly got new carpet before they left. My idiot of a partner decided as his parents were hiring out a professional carpet cleaner that we'd use it cuz he's a right arse and can never refuse a freebie, even though our carpet was fine. Since then there has been a horrible smell in our living room like public toilets (like used sanitary items ) from one part of the carpet. Has anyone else experienced this? Have we fucked our carpet? Can it be fixed?

Could you try some shake n vac or similar on it?

Perhaps it didn't dry through properly and left that smell. Id re clean that part with carpet shampoo and ensure water up sucked out properly and dried through with heating on

If it's a damp smell, bicarb of soda works well (make up as a solution, try and get it right down into the fibres with a brush if you have one, blot out as much of the moisture as possible, hoover after a couple of hours and leave to dry - if you have a dehumidifier, even better).
