Brown dust on kitchen bin

Last night I noticed a coating of brown dust on top and around the kitchen bin. I cleaned it and emptied the bin. This morning the dust is back! I’ve bleached the bin and wiped it but little specks still keep coming back. Nothing is moving, it’s just a fine coating of what seems like brown dust.

Google has said they could be mites but they aren’t in any of the cupboards, just the bin! What is it and more importantly, how can I get rid of it and stop it coming back?

Weird. Sounds gross.

You could try putting the bin outside for a few days, anything living in it will be frozen to death by then?

Just put a bin bag in place of the bin indoors in the meantime. Even in a bucket or something to make it easy to use. Be interesting to see if brown stuff accumulates on it once the actual bin is outside! Then you’ll know if the bin is the problem or if you have a infestation in the house.

What's above the bin? Is it plaster dust or something else?

@Elieza it was definitely extremely gross. The putting the bin outside idea worked and whatever it is seems to have died/ disappeared now. Thanks!

Phew! Just keep an eye on it in case whatever it was laid eggs that now hatch! Gross!
