Vacuum cleaner....which one?

I badly need a new vacuum cleaner. Mine is ancient and really doesn't do the job, but which one should I go for?
I've been told by various friends that Hetty is good as is the Vax, Hoover and Dyson.
Please help, which model do you have and would you recommend it?

I have a Harry which is the pet version of a Henry. I find it heavy, the suction is too strong for me and the turbo brush gets tangled with our long hairs (apparently we moult more than the dog 😂). It would be better if you had a big house on one level with no stairs and no long haired people who shed but I still think the suction is too strong as you can't easily adjust it.

I belong to a dog related social group and everyone swears by the shark. I'm getting one very soon!

Sleepyquest · 11/11/2019 20:36

Shark!! Definitely

Hecateh · 11/11/2019 21:43

anything but Vax. I've had a few of their machines

window vac - didn't vac
power wash - broke just after a year - only used 3 or 4 times
carpet cleaner - meh - best of a bad bunch
steam cleaner - leaked all over
and another that I can't remember

They nearly all worked well precisely once and then went downhill.

I hated my Dyson and got rid of it for some cheapo vacuum that I also wouldn’t recommend. Cost an arm and a leg and it didn’t bloody suck anything up! Carpets it worked ok enough, though was heavy to get upstairs, but downstairs on the lino it was shit! It just pushed the bits around and didn’t actually vacuum them up.

I’m hopping onto this thread in the hope someone will recommend a vacuum that is good for crumbs on kitchen lino!

Shark lift away!!!! I have always had a Henry and have been a cleaner for 8years, when my little boy got diagnosed with asthma and a dust allergy I thought I would try a new hoover as the rented property I moved into is fitted with carpet throughout.. so basically I hovered everywhere(skirting boards, ceilings, mattresses, etc) 2 hours before I picked my shark up and then again when I got the shark hoovered everywhere again and I couldn't believe how much was actually hiding away that Henry hadn't picked up!!! ( I had to empty the shark 4times)

I have since used a Henry and would never swap back, he's now in my garage and has retired!!

Roselilly36 · 24/11/2019 07:42

I agree with PP, Vax are poor build quality IMHO and in my experience breakdown a day or so after the guarantee expires.

Depends on whether you would like a corded or cordless hoover. I have a cordless Gtech Air ram, I love the convenience of being able to hoover with a cord to trip me up. Quick & easy.

Miele complete c3 pure power cylinder. A thing of wonder!

Melmam · 24/11/2019 07:47

I have a dyson and i love it have had it a year now and no problem.

GuyFawkesDay · 24/11/2019 07:49

Miele.

Had 2 Dysons. Both crap by comparison. The Miele is a beast.

Sharks are fine but really heavy.

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 24/11/2019 09:05

Shark liftaway here too! Bought in desperation after we (and the cleaner, with whom we parted ways) killed 4 vaxes in 2 years. Bits just kept snapping off!

I love the Shark. The headlights are surprisingly helpful (I thought they were a comedy gimic), it changes floor surfaces really easily and comes apart for maintenance without hassle. I can carry it upstairs one handed (DH used to have to carry the Dyson for me, before the vaxes) and the liftaway aspect is brilliant for fiddly areas and stairs. It's also very effective on pet hair / long strands of pink hair from DD!

breakfastpizza · 24/11/2019 09:23

Dysons are rubbish and have been for a few years now (went through 3!).

I bought a Shark a few months ago and I actually enjoy hoovering now!

RuggyPeg · 24/11/2019 10:38

We have a Dyson cordless aswell as the miele. Useless thing. On high suction, which isn't that high, it lasts all of 8 minutes.

TheGirlFromStoryville · 24/11/2019 10:46

Miele Blizzard.
Fabulous all rounder.

We've had various dysons, a vax cordless, and Miele is the best by far.

DM had her old Miele for about 11 years and I wish I would have bought one sooner.

ScrambledEggForBrains · 24/11/2019 18:18

Shark 💯% all the way 😃

Ablemaybel · 24/11/2019 20:38

Thank you all.
Looks as though the Shark is favourite.
They have some good deals at the moment, so think I'm going to go for the corded anti hair tangle lift away.

I'm never sure if there are Shark PR people on here. Confused

Our Shark is very sucky but keeps falling over all the time.

Goldwispa · 30/11/2019 18:19

Miele

DameXanaduBramble · 30/11/2019 18:20

Shark shark shark x million!!

Ablemaybel · 30/11/2019 19:39

Bought a shark online yesterday, being delivered tomorrow.
I'm actually looking forward to vacuuming!
