Safe but gorgeous smelly stuff

Hello
Wondering if anyone can advise the best way of making my house smell lovely (and festive/ autumnal/ Christmassy) without using loads of chemicals.
I have kids and cats and I know that rules out some types of oils. I think plug ins are not good for environment/ health (?)
I like the idea of pot pourri but in my experience the smell never lasts, ditto candles. I love scented candles but I can never find one who’s smell actually lasts. Any ideas?

Diffuser and essential oils. Also means you can easily costumise your scents and it's safe.

Also open windows every single day, tuck a cotton ball with essential oil behind the radiator and (my favorite) simmer some spices (cinnamon, star anise etc) in a pot on a very low heat for a Christmas/Autumnal vibe. I also do this in the summer with some oils or fabric conditioner (Ecover apple blossom)

Wilko have some nice pot pourri in, it's not like the old fashioned stuff I remember from the 80s. Picked up a bag a couple of weeks back, put a third of it out in a bowl in the living room and I can still smell it all over the house.
