Water softener and laundry detergent confusion

We’ve had a water softening system installed, and trying to figure out how much less laundry powder to use as a result (kids have really sensitive skin so we really need to get this right...)

Clothes keep coming out slightly ‘rough’ feeling despite using fabric conditioner. Could it be because soap is not washing off properly? We’ve reduced the powder dose by a third, but as we use unscented we can’t tell if it is residue soap causing the issue.

Does anyone else have this problem with water softeners? I thought it was supposed to improve things!

Thanks 🙏

I use half the amount of detergent and no fabric softener.
I love my water softener.

A way to check would be to do an extra rinse and see if that makes a difference.

Also look in the machine during the extra rinse- if there are lots of suds then there is still soap!
I'd cut down on soap until you can tell things are coming up less clean, personally.

Thanks, good idea on the extra rinse!
I will also use half the amount of soap instead and see how we get on...
