Ruined oven surround? Help!

We haven’t been in our house long and I’m sure the previous owners hadn’t cleaned our intergrated oven for years. I used an oven brite cleaner that you leave for hours. It cleaned my oven lovely but the dirty residue leaked between the gap in the oven door to the board underneath and had stained the wood, making it look unsightly! (See photo) what can I do? Is there some kind of paint I can use?

Is that actually timber or is it laminate? If it's timber, you can sand it and restain/varnish it. If it's laminate you can get some acrylic paints or testers and mix the colour to match and just touch it up. It won't be perfect but less noticable.

@HennyPennyHorror This is going to sound really stupid but how can you tell if it’s timber or laminate?

Looks like wood to me. Have you got any ‘pink stuff ‘? If so I would try very carefully just on the marked bits gently cleaning with that. Be careful it’s abrasive but it might get it off of look better. Is something to try before you have to sand it possibly....

Use cotton bud just on those bits

Laminate feels plasticy if you indent it with your nail it will leave a mark

Thanks everyone. It’s definitely wood. I went to ask for advice at b&q and he said to sand it then use an oil with a dye so I’ve done that and it just soaked in to the bit where it was stained and made it look worse! Think I’m going to have to paint it or live with it Confused
