Shoe shelves

Thriller alert- this is really boring. Where do your shoes live? I want all of them in the hallway, but almost all shoe racks are too small.

I need to fit 2 pairs of tall wellies, 6 pairs of not-so-tall boots (Chelsea boots, Docs etc) and 16 pairs of shoes and trainers. Smallest are adult size 3, so no teeny tinies.

We only have the most used shoes in the shoe rack, the rest live in wardrobes. Would doing that cut down on the space you need and open up your choices a bit more?

paxillin · 30/08/2019 13:44

We do that in theory, but they all migrate back down. I would like them all in the hallway if I can find something big enough.

disclaimer not my picture

Do you have space for something like this Billy bookcase... would probably look neater with doors.

There's an idea! I even have Billy bookcases (full of books, not shoes), so I can try out how many shelves I need before buying. I knew MN would have an answer, thank you.

I live in Sweden so we have all shoes in the hall - well, i sort them roughly by winter/summer and store them seasonally so we don't trip over winter boots all summer.

We have a billy actually - and I can heartily recommend Ikeas new shoe stackers too. Grey plastic thing so the shoes can stand one over the other. Saves soo much space.

Downside is it's not a very attractive thing to look at masses of shoes, but hey ho. We remove ours in the house so they have to be stored near the entrance.

mommybear1 · 30/08/2019 18:12

We went for a kallax unit with boxes for each person so they are all in one place and looks good to those passing by - not the most organised though Grinas they end up just being chucked in your box I do have shoe bags for wellies and boots as they tend to be muddy Wink

We had the bright idea to buy one of those ladder type shelving units and fitted it behind a door in a corner It is tall and holds lots of shoes and when the door is open It is hidden behind it. It works really well

I’ve just bought these from Ikea. They’re £3 each and you can stack them up. Each one fits three pairs of children’s shoes or two pairs if they’re size 7 or above. I bloody love them and they’ve totally changed my hall into a thing of understated organised beauty. They’re very sturdy as well.

I use these and think they are great. Twice as many shoes on each shelf in the cupboard.

The stackers are also a good idea and really cheap..

We have an integral garage so we just use an over the door shoe rack from Amazon. You can see them from the garage but not the hall but you obviously need to open the garage door every time you want your shoes. Do you have a utility room, cloak cupboard or garage you could do that with?

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 31/08/2019 19:28

We have these from Lakeland. They fit the whole families shoes comfortably and stretch the length of the hallway.

Honestly the Ikea ones are great. Worth a go at £3 each anyway.

paxillin · 01/09/2019 12:02

No, we don't have a garage or utility room. Slim hallway in a not very spacious flat. Kalax is a bit too deep I think, the Lakeland and the Ikea stackers look like they fit. Billy would, just. Do the stackers topple easily? Can the Lakeland ones be stacked?

wowfudge · 01/09/2019 12:13

We have these from IKEA in our porch. They also do a coat rack in the same range which has shoe storage space at the bottom.

OrangeJustice · 01/09/2019 17:39

Well they’re under the coat pegs against the wall here so no risk of toppling over. I’ve only got them stacked two high though.

Sunshine1235 · 01/09/2019 17:41

I have a billy bookshelf which I put doors on and use as hallway storage. I thought it would be a good solution but it’s not quite deep enough for any shoe sizes above a size 6 though so it doesn’t quite work. I’ve put a few baskets in it for the moment and am making it work but long term I need a better solution too

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 02/09/2019 12:29

The Lakeland ones come as 2 shelves and are stackable. I stacked one on top of the other to make 4 shelves but there is no restriction on how many can be stacked. They are pricey though. I think the whole set up cost about £100.
