Weird little bugs in my flat

Help - I'm finding these tiny little oval bugs everywhere - kitchen, bathroom, living room.

I keep spraying the place with fly spray and it seems to kill them (so that they fall into my crockery which is all on an open shelf...) but it's not getting rid of them.

They're tiny - smaller than a peppercorn, and look like crumbs - can barely see that they are insects until you poke them and they move...

They seemed to like golden syrup as I found loads all over that jar (now chucked) but not much else. They are not in flour or grains.

Is there a really good spray or other repellent I can use?

Sounds like carpet beetle to me:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dermestidae

I don't think they're harmless. I seem to get them occasionally and just pick them up with a tissue and throw them out the window!

Just searched a bit more and this link:

www.scambs.gov.uk/Environment/Pestsandnuisance/InsectPests/carpetbeetles.htm

says that a bird's nesst is often to blame if you have an infestation, and to get rid of that as a first step.

carpet beetles will eat upholstery and their larvae will eat clothing. We get them every few years for no apparent reason.
They can come in from outside.

do they look like laybirds but with sort of mottled spots?
Or are they something else?
