I have a giant tray to submerge these into. I have white vinegar, sodium bicarbonate powder, loads of different household cleaners. Could anyone advise the best thing to try, and how long for, before I begin?...

You don’t say what your plate is. If it’s cast iron, don’t lose the seasoning. Just heat on the burner, wipe or scrape, boiling water, scrape again and oil lightly.

Stainless steel, aluminium or Teflon may all be soaked with dishwasher tablets in hot water before a bit of a scrub and rinse. Some people use clothes powder but it will need good rinsing to lose the scent before cooking again.

I just use Brillo. Takes 5mins to clean grill.
