How to get rid of limescale/water stains in toilet above water line

I'm not sure they are limescale, they're not brown but more a sort of different shade of white, in downward streaks all around the bowl above the water line.
I've tried all the usual suspects, from everyday toilet cleaners /limescale removers to heavy duty paint-on gels, taking in household remedies like bicarb and white vinegar along the way but nothing makes a scrap of difference.
Any product suggestions or ideas would be gratefully appreciated.

Citric acid is meant to be great for this, although I haven't tried it myself!

Hydrochloric acid, you can buy from a hardware store.

Open window, Hold breath, Pour down loo around sides, close loo lid & leave the room & shut door. Leave for an hour or whatever bottle says. Pull chain & your loo will come up like new. It's dangerous stuff though, so handle with great care

YY to hydrochloric acid.

DS used a product called Zep (American) which contains hydrochloric acid. It did the trick overnight.

Before pouring it down the loo he drained all the water out of the U bend. Iirc he followed instructions on doing this that he found on YouTube.

He tried Coke first, also citric acid.

Cokes useless as it doesn’t stick to the sides for long enough to work.

Sterident tablets

Spirit of salts. Which is hydrochloric acid I think.

White vinegar, works perfectly

I think it’s very unlikely to be limescale if you’ve already tried limescale remover and it’s above the water line. More likely to be paint or cement from a previous building job. What happens if you just scrub it?

How old is your toilet? I'm going to assume we have a fairly old toilet (rental home) and we get this too. Limescale remover left over night and scrubbing gets rid of it.

Sometimes you really just need a toilet brush. Otherwise use a kitchen scrubby.

Brick acid from a builders merchants contains hydrochloric acid. Remove all water from the toilet bowl using a sponge and pour in the acid being careful, i watched it fizz away for a couple of mins, leave for about an hour then flush loo a few times, it brings the loo up sparkly clean. Have also used it on limescale marks on my shower tray and sink.
