Suncream stains on white t-shirts

How do you get these stains out? I use an own-brand whitener but it doesn’t work, even if I leave the t-shirt out in the sunshine after washing.

And do you think different suncreams stain more or less than others, or are they all as bad?

Thanks

try soaking the tshirt in white vinegar overnight, then putting it on the hottest wash (that the tshirt won't shrink in).

Hot water and caustic soda. NOT bleach.

littlecabbage · 09/07/2019 18:35

Thanks. Where does one purchase caustic soda? And does it affect any other colours on the t-shirt?

Not caustic soda! Do you mean soda Crystals? (Is caustic soda not used to unblock drains?)

TapasForTwo · 09/07/2019 20:53

Yes, I meant soda crystals, not caustic soda.
Soda crystals are by the washing powder in any supermarket.

Washing up liquid rubbed into the stains before washing (I wash on 40 degrees) and then hang to dry in the sun. This worked on my sons white top the other day that had yellow suncream staining on, if it’s old stains that have been left to set in I’m not sure if it works the same.

I use fairy platinum washing up liquid too, Incase that makes any difference.

littlecabbage · 09/07/2019 21:31

Okay, soda crystals - noted!

Will try the washing up liquid idea also. Thanks.

Sorry, just noticed the white vinegar idea - will try that too.

Yes different suncreams do vary. We bought a boots soltan kids one and it was horrendous. Horrible yellow stains on everything, wish I had read the reviews!

littlecabbage · 11/07/2019 22:55

Can anyone recommend one that doesn’t stain much? Our Solero one stains loads!

I had tried the white vinegar washing up liquid combo and that made them worse on a white cotton top

So just this week I used Desolve -it spray, then rubbed on vanish bar stain remover and a soak in hot water and bio washing powder then a hot white wash and it pretty much rescued this same top I had put in the charity rag bag.

This has been quite good this year, no stains of note so far!

I just got loads of sweat and suncream stains out of a white blouse. I soaked it in bio-d laundry bleach (which is bloody fantastic - been faffing with various non toxic laundry whiteners for ages, wish I'd tried this earlier!) mixed with a health splash of hydrogen peroxide. Soaked overnight and washed as normal. Blouse good as new! 😊
