How often do you clear out your fridge?

I hate doing this. I take out trays and wash them, etc. Throw away slimy spring onions and limp broccoli. Sniff the yogurt, etc. I do it every week, usually, before putting away a big shop. This week I can’t face it. How often do you do yours? Does one really need to do it every week? (I’m hoping not.)

Every week!
Just before I do a big shop so I know exactly what's in there. Although, nothing is slimey or limp or smelly...

CherryPavlova · 01/07/2019 22:04

Every week before new delivery

hummusavocado · 01/07/2019 22:05

One quick tip - each time you go into the fridge to take something out to eat, grab something that's on it's way out. That way you won't even notice having to clear it out as you are doing it as you go!

delilahbucket · 01/07/2019 22:05

Every week as the shipping arrives, although anything off usually gets binned straight away.

Pascha · 01/07/2019 22:06

Every week when the shopping arrives, but I tend to clear as I go anyway. I'm not one for limp veg and salad and I don't tend to keep half used jars very long.

Thesearmsofmine · 01/07/2019 22:07

Every week here.

HellInAHandCartThatsWhat · 01/07/2019 22:10

About every two weeks. I’m a terrible one for ignoring use by dates and generally only honestly clear it out when I’m wondering where the cucumber has going and then find cucumber soup...

LazyFace · 01/07/2019 22:10

I don't. I look in and cook things that need cooking first. I have the odd yoghurt missed every now and discover a mouldy one every 3 months or so.

bellsbuss · 01/07/2019 22:14

Every week before my big shop I take everything out wipe down shelves and wash out drawers.

Keepthebloodynoisedown · 01/07/2019 22:16

Every week before the shop is delivered

I make a weekly meal plan and check the fridge when I write my shopping list. Because I only buy what I need for the week, I don’t usually have anything going off or slimy.
I put the (glass) shelves through the dishwasher periodically, if they’re getting grubby from the odd drip or spill of home made soup, stock or whatever. They come out sparkling. And I scrub out the door where the 4 pint milk packets stand, as they often have grubby bottoms. But I don’t have a regular fridge cleaning rota - it’s just when I notice it needs done.

Rayna37 · 01/07/2019 22:16

Hardly ever! I might wipe up any obvious spills. If you need to do this every week then I'd suggest you're buying too much and have food going to waste.

Titsywoo · 01/07/2019 22:17

I clear it out most weeks. I probably only clean it properly once every 6 months though. Obviously spills are wiped up when they happen so it's never really dirty.

123confused · 01/07/2019 22:18

Never. I wipe/clean as required but never actually clear it out completely.

LifeIsGoodish · 01/07/2019 22:53

I do a complete scrub-down once a year, before we go on holiday, when the fridge is virtually empty because I've tried to use up as much of its contents as possible. Otherwise it's as and when needed. Spills get wiped up as soon as they're discovered. If a shelf or drawer happens to be empty I'll take it out and clean it.

Mabellavender · 01/07/2019 22:54

Every week before the shopping comes.

DustyMaiden · 01/07/2019 22:57

Clean every week before shopping, rarely throw things away. It doesn’t take 5 mins

lljkk · 01/07/2019 22:57

Er... never. We don't waste food like that. We decide what to eat based on what needs to be eaten.

Whathappenedtooursummer · 01/07/2019 23:00

Never.
I have teens who do it for me....

FirstTimeToddlerMum · 01/07/2019 23:24

Every week before the food shop arrives. We have started storing the food in date order. Bottom shelf being needs to be eaten first as goes out of date first , next shelf maybe within the next week and so on.

Can honestly say we haven't wasted anything since doing that -probably breaking hundreds of fridge storage rules (we don't eat meat so no meat contamination) but it works for us and we're still alive Grin

Chloe9 · 01/07/2019 23:28

Not often
It doesn't need it though, often has very little in it and I wipe as I go

MrsFezziwig · 01/07/2019 23:32

Never.

MiniMum97 · 03/08/2019 00:16

As needed. Spills and crumbs etc get wiped up as they occur. Full fridge clean maybe once every 4-6 weeks with spit cleans in between. Off stuff is thrown away every few days to a week but we try to keep food waste to a minimum.
