Any recommendations for a carpet cleaner please?

Googling for recommendations brings up conflicting advice.

Has anyone got a good one? Ideally I would like an upright one - I would say quite lightweight but they all look fairly heavy!
Any I should avoid?

i have the vax one the £99 basic one from argos and i find it easy to use not very lightweight but like using an upright vacumn cleaner its that easy, the more expensive vax one does stairs as well but i wasnt bothered about that i just do my stairs by hand
