Carpet cleaning

I am moving to a new house soon and the owners had a dog and a cat so I was thinking I ought to get the carpets cleaned before the grand come to play. But there are so many different systems and the prices vary so much that I am confused. What systems has anyone used and would recommend and how much should I expect to pay for a normal sized 3 bed house?

i went to argos and bought the basic vax carpet shampooer £99 and so worth it as i have it in the house and if someone spills something or the carpets just generally get mucky its there , i use stardrops and hot water in mine, its easy to use just use it with the spray and then slowly bring it back, its just like hoovering the carpets twice over
