Decluttering one thing a day part 8 - the one where we de-tetris the cupboard of doom!

WoogleCone · 14/06/2019 07:47

Welcome! This is thread 8 of the declutter one thing a day challenge!

This is just holding the discussion open until @stealthninjamum gets her computer sorted and back in action :)

Everyone is welcome here, new and old. We implore you to join us on our mission to clear the cupboards, swipe the sides and declutter all debris!
We recycle, reuse, give away, donate or just plain chuck it out to help clear our spaces.

If you're new, start with a small mission - can you tackle one small area at a time? Be it a bedside table, a bathroom cabinet or The Kitchen Drawer?
Just one thing a day is all we ask and report back here with your outs for the day, or week at a time. It's very easy to get the bug when you start small and have success!

Will we find any more big bags of change? Can we sell more big ticket items? Will the school books all get returned? Will the happy meal toys ever stop multiplying and just how many books can we say goodbye to?!

@Coldhandscoldheart I also recommend signing up to PayPal :)

I’m on the way to my dating scan, but I’ve had a very productive morning! I’ve finished the bookcase from hell, sorted through all the storage boxes and chucked loads of things out. Why in God’s name I have 16 various types of extension leads I don’t know! I also have enough make up and toiletries to last me at least a year, at least I won’t need to buy any.

SandAndSea · 13/08/2019 13:43

Nutella - I don't remember this being discussed on here before. @StealthNinjaMum?

SandAndSea · 13/08/2019 15:28

Today's outs so far:

2 empty mini dehumidifiers.
Small laundry tablet bag.
Mini packet of 2 buttons.

StayDetermined · 13/08/2019 16:32

Sorted out the children’s books today - I got rid of a bag of baby ones a few days ago, today is another box full going that DD has outgrown and that I don’t want to save for DS.
Not made an appreciable difference tbh though as they have so fricking many.

SandAndSea · 13/08/2019 17:09

2 woolly hats and some out of date money off voucher's.

InOmniaParatus13 · 13/08/2019 19:16

@StealthNinjaMum thank you for your lovely warm welcome! It really was so touching to see him keep sentimental things. I miss him dearly, but knowing how much he loved me really keeps me going!

I have found more storage boxes, so currently going through them and being ruthless with what I chuck away!

Coldhandscoldheart · 14/08/2019 06:15

Sorted two boxes yesterday into a smaller collection of well, stuff without lay, but I’m going to try to address that today. It included finding about £200 in cash from various birthdays , so win.
Estate agent coming this afternoon, (‘should he bring the camera?’ Said the lady on the phone, I nearly fainted. Not quite ready for photos yet)

I am going to put a shelf into the medicine cupboard today. I will go round and sand all the little bits down ready to paint. I will start decluttering the horrible shelves in the spare room.
Unless I do the Hall Cupboard of Doom.

What might I want from Home Bargains this morning?

mathanxiety · 14/08/2019 06:20

Out:
Small humidifier.
All the odd socks.

A slow week this week.
Bag of outgrown dc clothes to my friend.
Cake tin back to another friend, which I filled with cake
Wrapped a present ready to post today
Small steps I guess

Namechangedtoprotect · 14/08/2019 09:40

Do we count things off the to do list? Dc have been to the dentist and had a back to school hair cut

Namechangedtoprotect · 14/08/2019 09:41

Also I've bought and wrapped dh anniversary presents and booked our meal so more from the to do list.

Coldhandscoldheart · 14/08/2019 13:51

Right. Underestimated what I needed to do, but with ten minutes to spare I’m as ready as I’m going to be, have managed to vac round, just have to ignore the Pile behind my chair and the various sub Piles in each room.

Ownerofmultiplechimps · 14/08/2019 14:24

Only stuff in so far today, new uniform bits for Ds1 but I have a list of things to go through for eBay etc. Ds1 has a friend round so that should give me an hour or so whilst ds2 naps to get something done.

StayDetermined · 14/08/2019 15:54

Freecycle person was prompt in collecting the books today, and I also got rid of an old pair of curtains - I found a brand new pair in the charity shop for only £5 that replaced some very tired old ones. So no huge progress but my new curtains look good.

SandAndSea · 14/08/2019 18:13

Oo, Stay, that sounds great! What a bargain!

I've done a bit more sorting and have got rid of another box!! Grin

VallarMorghulis · 14/08/2019 20:34

I'm on annual leave this week and I've done loads:

  • decluttered wardrobe, got rid of a few nice handbags inherited from my mum, I don't use handbags and always planned to sell them but they've been for years in my wardrobe. SandandSea's advice to not bother with selling until some progress has been made came just in time GrinAlso got rid of a few clothes, a suitcase and a travel bag.
  • I've been busy in the kitchen since Monday: first I decluttered the drawers and got rid of sooo much stuff! I also swap the drawers around so that putting things away is easier.
  • then I decided to finally use the chalkboard paint that I bought a few weeks ago to paint one ugly, lime green wall. To do this I had to move the fridge, I can't describe to you the horror that I found there Envyso that got cleaned! Painted the wall, then decided to swap the position of the fridge and one of the floor cabinets (they're not fixed to the wall, they're cute but impractical vintage ones). To do this I had to empty the crockery cabinet, which got decluttered in the process ( I have so. Many. Bowls)

I'm having a break right now then I have to move the last cabinet, then wait for DS to come home to help me move the fridge to its final position.

Moving the fridge and painting the wall are both things I've meant to do for years, so I am very grateful indeed for this thread and its many fine posters for keeping me motivated and focused ThanksSmile

VallarMorghulis · 14/08/2019 20:36

Nutella I've used these by the weight clothes things, you don't get much money for them but why not?

SandAndSea · 14/08/2019 21:01

WOW! Vallar! That's amazing!!! Very well done! Star Star Star

HungryHazelEyes · 15/08/2019 04:08

I've had a few outs the last couple of days, a pair of fluffy socks with holes on the bottom, and added a few items to the yard sale pile - a clipboard and a mini binoculars set. DD also gave me yet another carrier bag full of clothes, I'm starting to think her wardrobe will have nothing left in it!
Tomorrow night we'll be putting out our signs for our huge sale, ready for Saturday!

RaspberryBlonde · 15/08/2019 08:22

Pleased to hear about your curtain bargain StayDetermined, I’ve donated several pairs of curtains recently as they didn’t fit the windows in our current house, so it’s nice to hear that they are something that sells. £5 is a steal!

Two parcels of nappies went to the post office yesterday; think that was the easiest sell ever! I should’ve done it ages ago. Not much else out though.

Hope that your scan went well Omnia

StealthNinjaMum · 15/08/2019 08:33

nutellaquest the boxes I bought were here but they’re probably too big
www.amazon.co.uk/Plastic-Folding-Container-Foldable-Portable/dp/B00P6ZDXGC/ref=sr_1_15?s=gateway&keywords=stackable+plastic+storage+crates&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1565853697&sr=8-15

but I did an amazon search for boxes for you and some of these might be suitable.

www.amazon.co.uk/s?ref=nb_sb_noss_2&k=food+cupboard+basket&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

I’m almost quite tempted to buy some for me but that would be unnecessary.

I’m not sure that we have discussed the companies that weigh your clothes but I had a bad experience with a local one - well not a bad experience, it’s just I took a load of clothes and they gave me absolute peanuts for them and they were really lovely brands. It was at the start of my decluttering so I just wanted stuff to go but there were a couple of expensive evening dresses there so I probably should’ve ebayed them or even given them to my favourite charity shop where the money would’ve done some good.

coldhandscoldheart ooh you’re doing loads. I am excited waiting to hear if you did the Horrible Shelves in the Spare Room or the Hall Cupboard of Doom. I would go for the Shelves if they were visible.

vallarmorghulis I got tired just reading your list!

Not much gone at this end, mainly leaves. I’m quite proud of my drive. Also my pile of scrap paper that I saved and have been making lists on actually looks about half the size of when I started. It’s mainly old envelopes, invite cards and thank you cards (children’s stuff and my wedding invitations) that were cluttering a drawer. It’s better to use them than recycle them.

Namechangedtoprotect · 15/08/2019 09:41

Good morning
I have a couple of child free hours today. I plan to finish the painting and do something else constructive, any ideas?
I've been keeping the kitchen tidy and slowly sorting out the living room.

RaspberryBlonde · 15/08/2019 10:49

Namechanged I often use my childfree hours to sneak favourite outgrown clothes or broken toys out!

Had a quick win this morning as found a bag of things I'd put aside to bin from the playroom (mainly things DD had made and plastic tat from magazines). That was a way and she hasn't noticed it's gone so it's now in the bin!
