Decluttering one thing a day part 8 - the one where we de-tetris the cupboard of doom!

WoogleCone · 14/06/2019 07:47

Welcome! This is thread 8 of the declutter one thing a day challenge!

This is just holding the discussion open until @stealthninjamum gets her computer sorted and back in action :)

Everyone is welcome here, new and old. We implore you to join us on our mission to clear the cupboards, swipe the sides and declutter all debris!
We recycle, reuse, give away, donate or just plain chuck it out to help clear our spaces.

If you're new, start with a small mission - can you tackle one small area at a time? Be it a bedside table, a bathroom cabinet or The Kitchen Drawer?
Just one thing a day is all we ask and report back here with your outs for the day, or week at a time. It's very easy to get the bug when you start small and have success!

Will we find any more big bags of change? Can we sell more big ticket items? Will the school books all get returned? Will the happy meal toys ever stop multiplying and just how many books can we say goodbye to?!

Shockits not every day you wake up to a deleted post on this thread!!! Are you an early morning troll brian or just a super extreme declutterer? Grin

Welcome elenor! Glad to hear you've already made great progress, feels good doesn't it?

Good job on the diy munch! Those layers take ages but it looks amazing when it's been done with care and attention!

It's interesting about thinking on peoples ages, I assume I'm one of the younger ones but only because of the age of everyone's children! But I could be easily very wrong as who knows at what age people have had them!

SandAndSea · 01/08/2019 09:46

Oo! Bit of excitement on the thread! Grin

MunchMunch · 01/08/2019 10:08

Just took a few things out that has been in a box in DD's cupboard for years since at least 2005
So my outs are;
A blouse
A shirt
Shorts
A jumper
A skirt
2 cordless house phones
Baby booties
A cap from an Ayia Napa party cruise in 2001
A receipt from 2005
2 pairs of knickers
A magazine
A crocheted blanket
4 pairs of dh's old work trousers

It took all of 2 minutes to go through so why have I left it years to do?! Confused

It’s so busy in here! I was out most of yesterday as DS was doing a settling session at the childminder. She’s just told me her hours are now a bit shorter than when we last used her a year ago so I’m mentally reworking our logistics. Annoyed I didn’t check this earlier!

Out today is a small bag of miscellaneous cables plus a broken mouse to the tip. Also a parcel of things I bought online returned to the post office. Weirdly DD has decided to do some decluttering...so far she has identified 3 DVDs which belong to other people to go! I guess this is too be encouraged....

Hope Wooglette is doing ok Woogle, DS was miserable with his jabs every time, he gets a really high temperature.

That sounds like a great box MunchMunch. I think I have one like that somewhere! Good luck with rest of DIY.

interesting about people’s ages...I’m sure my mental pictures are all wrong!

SandAndSea · 01/08/2019 11:48

MunchMunch - Ahh, that's one of life's eternal questions! Smile

SandAndSea · 01/08/2019 11:59

The other day, when my friend came round to go through my pile, I decided to keep 4 items of clothing as I just wasn't ready to let go of them due to feelings, memories and stuff like that. Well, I'm now ready to get rid of 2 of them. I'm still keeping 2 but I'm OK with that at the moment.

I also got a cuddly toy out to get rid of, but, when I saw his little face, I just couldn't. I might wash him instead and see how we go. A lot of my clutter is sentimental atm.

I also have a nice crockery set which I'd like to sell but I'm missing some of it. I think there is a box somewhere in the house, but I don't know where. I think I'm going to have to venture under the stairs, which I have been avoiding.

Namechangedtoprotect · 01/08/2019 12:18

So final under bed boxes sorted and things allocated to bin/charity/recycling. Also the masking tape done ready to start painting the hall so I'm feeling very virteous

Wtf??!! I think we've only ever had 1 troll/spammer before today.

PurpleFrog · 01/08/2019 14:44

It is now over 2 weeks since I last updated. Sigh! In that time I filled up the brown bin with garden waste. I tidied up the front garden including pruning the front face of a shrub which should be pruned after flowering. It has never been pruned so early in the year. Grin I'll take a couple of feet off the height once the leaves have gone and I can see properly.

I also did a bit of preliminary sorting out in the loft and spare room. Not much has gone yet, but I am more aware of what is there. I have cleared better access to some areas and have stacked things making it easier to remove individual boxes to sort through. I went though the rest of the clothing and bedding from Mum's house and have sorted the stuff into bags of similar items. From this I have got rid of a stained pillow to landfill and a bag of shabby/patched bedding as rag recycling. I intend to wash the rest of the clothes soon and recycle or charity shop them. I have washed a heavy trench-type coat already, which will make the next charity shop drop-off. I now have to admit that this whole sort-out was prompted by losing 2 items. Blush One has now been found - in the loft but not the area I sorted. Sigh! Although, I did find 2 other items whose whereabouts had been puzzling me for a while.

I have continued to plug away at decluttering at work, but that has accelerated with news last week of some room changes. I have to remove a large amount of stuff from a room which was being used as storage and either chuck or re-site it . I have just under 3 weeks until it is turned back into an office. It also looks like I may be having an office move myself later on. Sad

StealthNinjaMum · 01/08/2019 20:18

sandandsea isn't there always excitement on the thread? Remember when green willows new hoover didn't fit in the cupboard? And when purple frogs boiler died? And when you got rid of a box? And don't forget baby woogle being born? Or maybe I dreamt the third one.

SandAndSea · 01/08/2019 20:54

Grin You dreaming about me again, Stealth?

(Don't forget about my plastic sheet.)

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 01/08/2019 21:58

Currently about 3 car boots (with seats down) of stuff ready for a tip run tomorrow. Including a loaf of wood that was the pallet bar.

Tomorrow I will declutter 2 children to the Grandparents house.

bobgoblin · 01/08/2019 22:26

Yesterday's outs were all from DS's room - five empty Lego boxes, a broken toy, a bag and a few pieces of 'art' for the recycling. We had a tidy up in there as well and can finally see the floor again.

We've been out all day today so the only decluttering has been of the bank account - I always forget how expensive the school holidays end up being if I'm not careful! We have another day out planned for tomorrow but we won't be out for so long so I will try and find one item to declutter.

PurpleFrog · 01/08/2019 22:43

Stealth you have a good memory! We have had our new boiler for almost a year now. I could really do without that kind of “excitement” this August/September!

SandAndSea · 02/08/2019 02:54

More outs today:

Thoroughly cleaned an animal grooming kit.
Old clippers have gone to charity.
Broken scissors are going to the dump for recycling.
Finally fitted the last water filter in the old jug. (This has been stored away for ages. Once used up, the jug will be going & I've diarised to remind me to do this.)

Palaver1 · 02/08/2019 13:53

Hi all
Not much to declutter but emptied out both cupboards under the sinks in the bathrooms lots of half empty bottles of crap mostly my elder daughters emptied out two bags full.

MunchMunch · 02/08/2019 18:37

Hi everyone, not much done today as I've done dm's shopping and other errands most of the day.
I'm just waiting for my dad to finish work to drop him off at home then I'm going to decluttering a couple of oven pizzas for the kids tea tonight so I can get on with the 4!!! Coat of bathroom paint - I'm slowly losing the will to live here! Grin fingers crossed the 4th coat is the last, but if not a 5th
should definitely do it. 🤦‍♀️ Then I just have to clean the floor, rearrange the bathroom unit's and jobs a good'un

gassylady · 02/08/2019 19:02

Electrician needed access to the cupboard under the stairs- good excuse to pull everything out and have a sort. Trouble is pils is currently sat in lounge to be picked through 🙄 Have already found two old bike locks for charity bag and a pair of gloves for charity shop and coat with broken zip for rag bag.

gassylady · 02/08/2019 19:02

Pile even my PILS are at home as far as I know 🤣

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 02/08/2019 19:34

Decluttered the children to the Grandparents...
Started serious work on DD1s room, a pile of books to pass on and loads of crap ready for the tip run, like several years old school books, empty Lego boxes etc.
