CDs - has anyone set themselves a maximum number? Did it work or did you regret it?

I have given away or sold hundreds of CDs in the last few years, but I still have about 500 albums and between DH and me we own about 1500. We don't want to digitise everything as we are not that into devices and it seems silly to have the original and just listen to an MP3 copy. Nor do we want to throw away cases and keep them in envelopes, as DH feels that risks damage/loss and I tend to agree.

When we can afford it, I would like to pay a carpenter to put up some proper shelving, but ATM they are split between a cabinet built for DVDs and some open racks. I have been seriously thinking about setting myself a maximum number, being really ruthless about what I love and getting rid of the rest, but I'm not sure if this will work. It feels a bit soulless and I have done so may passes already...

Has anyone else done this? What do you think? TIA.

...so many passes.

All of them gone. Upgraded to digital music players and don’t have a CD player in the house.

It would be like keeping video tapes! Could you both pick 50 of your favourites and then digitise the rest?

AlexaShutUp · 02/06/2019 19:17

We went digital instead. I didn't want to initially but eventually decided to go for it and haven't looked back since. It's so liberating!

Like the pps our maximum
Number = 0 sorry! We got rid of them all, bought wireless / Bluetooth speakers and stream everything - don’t even download anything tbh.

GummyGoddess · 03/06/2019 17:08

Do you still use them?

everythingisginandroses · 03/06/2019 20:47

GummyGoddess yes we do still play them (some a lot more than others, to be fair). We don't do streaming, prefer owning physical copies but buy very few new ones due to financial and space constraints.

Given that technology changes all the time (iTunes is being ditched, according to today's announcement) and old formats like vinyl have had a resurgence, I share your reluctance to get rid of physical format - I also play a lot of music in the car and mine has a CD player. Although we do have iPods, and I use Spotify, we also have a house full of vinyls and CDs, and have dedicated shelving to accommodate it (in an alcove). In fact, we're planning on buying more as DD1 is starting to buy her own vinyl and needs space now! So I'd say if you play it, display it proudly and make a suitable space.

I think if you want to continue to own the then you do just need to go with the shelving idea. We've done two things. I've got rid of all of mine and gone to streaming. OH has proper shelving for both vinyl and cds.

RedRiverShore · 05/06/2019 16:56

I have only kept a few of mine, my favourites which I play in the car, DH on the other hand has got loads and they are on open cd shelving and do annoy me so much as I am sure he never plays most of them.

RedRiverShore · 05/06/2019 17:01

We have something like this stuck on the wall for DHs CDs

I chucked all the cases, and put the dvds/cd's into padded wallets that hold a couple if hundred each. So I still have the actual media if needed but they are just stored in cupboard.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 06/06/2019 15:16

We still have CDs and a Player. I have digitised most of them, and use Spotify, but some of what I listen to isn't available on Spotify, and I quite like having a hard copy for occasional but inevitable tech problems. We ditched the jewel cases, and keep CDs and their inserts in storage sleeves with no ill effects so far.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 06/06/2019 18:03

I wish DH would put all of his in the small plastic wallets that hold lots of CDs...
