I read some old thread on another site that said to use a mixture of white vinegar, bicarbonate of soda and water instead of the softener. Does anyone use this, if so what are the ratios?

I don't use anything at all.
I try to use the minimum of powder so there isn't a residue.
My clothes feel soft.
If I need a scent I put a drop of essential oil in the wash.

Just white vinegar, you don’t want to mix vinegar and bicarb in your machine!!

depends on what you are after.
if it's scent a few drops of essential oils will do that.
for softness just white vinegar.

If you mix vinegar and bicarb then they get neutralised by each other as one is acid and the other an alkali.

If you add one to the other you will get a volcano effect which I'm sure you don't want in your washing machine drawer!

White vinegar is then!! In the softener compartment of the drawer, I assume? Same amount as softener I would normally use?
