Vanish oxyaction powder- what did I do wrong?!

Just looking if someone can advise me on what went wrong when I used this to brighten some white washing. I put one scoop into the detergent draw along with my detergent, as it states on the tub, when I took the load out it looked just as grey as before. Assumed it hadn’t worked or the clothes were to far gone to be rescued. Anyway I was putting in another load of washing and found the powder had formed into a lump in the draw. It hadn’t been washed into the machine with the detergent. What did I do wrong?!

I’d just redo it with powder in the drum rather than the drawer.

MoreSlidingDoors · 14/04/2019 08:34

It says on it to put it in the drum, doesn’t it?

whodafeck · 14/04/2019 08:37

I would soak whites in it with as hot water as they can take and for as long as possible and then put it in the drum with double the normal amount of detergent and the longest wash possible.

I think ace bleach is better than vanish for whites tbh.

dementedpixie · 14/04/2019 08:38

Were you using powder or liquid detergent? If it was liquid then adding powder to it would make it just form into a clump. Powders are better for whites as they contain bleaches

dementedpixie · 14/04/2019 08:40

You could put the powder into the drum instead of the drawER if using liquid detergent

StyleOfTheTimes · 14/04/2019 08:48

Ohhh. I do use a liquid detergent maybe that’s where it went wrong? 🤦🏻‍♀️ It didn’t say not to so I assumed that when the water flushed the detergent into the wash load the powder would dissolve or get washed in with the liquid. I’ll try again and put in into the drum!

Thank you all for your advice!

Doesn't liquid detergent go in the ball thing in the drum? I've never put it in the drawer.

StyleOfTheTimes · 14/04/2019 08:58

I don’t know? I’ve always put it in the drawer? I use own brand detergent and it doesn’t ever come with a ball. I know persil and fairy does though.

If you want whites to stay whiter I would consider switching to powder as the bleaches in them will help with that. Liquids don't contain bleaches

MoreSlidingDoors · 14/04/2019 09:30

The water going through the drawer is cold. It won’t dissolve the powder.

IWouldLikeToKnow · 14/04/2019 10:19

I always put the vanish into the drawer. And I use liquid detergent in the drum.

happyhillock · 14/04/2019 10:30

I alway's use powder, and put vanish in the drum
