Recycling stereo equipment-anyone done it?

Not quite sure where to post this, but...

Decluttering and decided to get rid of our old sound/ hi-fi systems. They're in perfect working order and by Sony but seriously old (like 15 years, one of them even has a tape deck, much to my mortification) and we just don't use them any more.

Has anyone got any experience of using a company that buys/ recycles this stuff? I can't believe anyone local will want to buy it but it grieves me to think of it just clogging up a land fill. So money isn't really a motivation, just getting rid of it easily and as responsibly as possible.

Thanks!

Your local civic recycling centre will take e waste like this and recycle it

TheSpottedZebra · 16/03/2019 14:38

Not really what you're asking, but all electrical equipment taken to my local tip gets stripped for wires and parts.

TheSpottedZebra · 16/03/2019 14:39

Or you could post in freegle and see if someone wants it as is?

TheBitterBoy · 16/03/2019 14:46

I had similar and was surprised how much i got for it on ebay. Alternatively, our local tip has a re-use area where they test electrical stuff and then sell it on or pass to charities to sell.

Charity shop

eBay - DH bought an old system with tape deck identical to the one he had that stopped working. He did try a new one but the sound just didn't compare

Gumtree

You'd be surprised who still like these

ChishandFips33 · 16/03/2019 18:12

Also some schools have tinker tables so like things for the children to take apart

Processedpea · 16/03/2019 18:12

I would try eBay too

elQuintoConyo · 16/03/2019 18:13

I love ours and wish it had a tape deck Sad I still have a handful of mixtapes from the 90s!

Processedpea · 16/03/2019 18:13

I was in a record shop the other day that some cassette tapes

Freecycle will have takers, ime.

We have a non-working stereo but speakers are ok... I expect no one will want them, though. I've offered on freecycle but expect no takers.

Charity shops can't afford PAT testing so won't take ime. Super old stereos (like 1980s) can sell for good prices on Ebay.

flissfloss65 · 16/03/2019 18:15

Sell it. My ds looked for ages for an old fashioned hifi. Does it have a record player?

Marmaladegin · 17/03/2019 06:33

Hmmm. Ok interesting, I'll give eBay a whirl. Thanks folks!
