I am in the market for a new ironing board. Am considering getting a wide one but does this make ironing t-shirts etc tricky. I don't want to stretch my clothes? Any other disadvantages. Was looking at a 45 cm one. Thanks!

Oh. I thought this was going to be a one word question:

Ironing T-shirts? Are you sure you need to? Ours - pure cotton or part other things - dry flat and fine just on a rack, even if we don't get them out on the line.

Sorry, I do realise that's probably not at all helpful (unless it triggers an epiphany and you toss the iron out!). I've tried a wide board at holiday lets and hated it, home one is an el-cheapo from Wilcos for the rare occasions it gets used.

I love my wide board... makes doing shirts and bedsheets so much easier. I do t-shirts folded flat (so no stretching). To get to the edges near seams, if needed, I just fold differently (i.e. not straight along the seam).

Wider board has been a game changer for me I can whip through ironing a lot quicker never had a problem with t shirts or smaller items.

Thanks ladies! @SpoonBlender why did you hate the wider board?

BTW I am only an occasional ironed. My DH likes to iron and as am investing in a new board just want to make sure I don't pick an annoying one.

They've just been unweildy - too big to work on easily and bloody heavy. There's no advantage with the extra space, it didn't make anything easier. I was only using it because we got completely soaked out on a walk and needed half a dozen items of clothing dry quickly due to lack of spares!

One did have a neat thing, a swingout mini-board to pop shirt sleeves over, which I can see being actually useful for someone who buys shirts that require ironing.

If your DH is the ironer can't he choose a board to suit him?

@DustyDoorframes He might be the ironer but he's certainly not a shopper! He can't bare internet shopping particularly and seems to fall into a rage after about two web pages! I am good at research, shopping and money so those tasks fall to me. I also don't mind them. He also works ridiculous hours so doesn't have much time for shopping either. I am part time as I have a chronic illness so am often stuck in anyway. I may as well research ironing boards!

I find the Brabantia one to be very good.

I’ve had it for many years and it’s lasted longer than any other board I’ve ever had (although I’m on my third cover).

Ironing is quicker as you don’t need to reposition things so often. I do t-shirts and knitwear flat on the board anyway but probably would stretch them if I “fed” them over the end.

I had one. It made doing dd2s pinafores more difficult, I had to do them flat over the board and they never looked right, you could see the imprint of the peats on the otherside.

I didn't like it and prefer my new one.

Try a Fast Press. They are excellent and 1/2 the ironing time.
