Does anyone switch to 30 degrees (was just reading the supplement in next weeks Radio Times)

yes all the time, bed linen once every 2 weeks

towel once a week

BibiThree · 04/07/2007 18:23

Kim and Aggie suggest 2 towels at least a week, bedding changed weekly and all washed at 60 degrees to break down sweat.

Personally, we do one towel a week, bedding once a week and wash at 40. Only occasionally I'll give them a 60 wash.

SimplySparkling · 04/07/2007 18:27

Bedlinen every week at 60 degrees. Towels once a week (sometimes twice) and the temp depends on what I decide that day, for no good reason! Sometimes 40 degrees, sometimes 50 and other times 60. I very rarely use 30 degrees, I have to admit.

30 degrees is all well and good for the environment, but sweat smells and most stains just don't wash out at 30 degrees and I end up washing things twice, which is really bad for the environment...

nomdeplume · 04/07/2007 18:29

Chez NDP...

Towels are generally used 2/3 times before getting chucked in the wash (prob every other day)

Kids bedlinen changed once every 10 days - 2 weeks

Mine and DH's bedlinen changed weekly

All washed at 60.

The only time I use 30 degrees is when I use the handwash/delicates cycle on my machine.

I use 40 degrees for most other washes. 50 degrees if they are particularly mucky

stealthsquiggle · 04/07/2007 18:30

Whenever it looks/smells like it needs it and at 90 except coloured stuff which is at 60.

doughnuts · 04/07/2007 18:32

so you reckon 30 is too cool - I haven't used it as I stick to 40 degrees for everything, but was wondering whether to try it with Ariel....

OP posts:
BibiThree · 04/07/2007 18:34

Nope, we use Ariel and it doesn't shift bean juice or tomato-based stains at all at 30.

nomdeplume · 04/07/2007 18:36

30 brings my bras, knitwear and other delicate stuff up well, but then they are never that dirty when they go in. It is more of a 'freshen up' than anything else.

I use Persil non-bio, if that makes any difference

Hulababy · 04/07/2007 18:36

Towels get washed 1-2 times a week and bedding is changed about once a month. I just don't have time to do it any more frequently than that!

I tend to wash at 40 degrees with non biological powder.

nomdeplume · 04/07/2007 18:36

Although I don't use persil non bio on my delicates

JulesJules · 04/07/2007 18:36

We all have our own towels, two sets each (colour coded!!) changed weekly. All bed linen changed weekly, do all washes at 40 unless stains... in which case 60. Do not think 30 is a high enough temp for sheets and towels.

nomdeplume · 04/07/2007 18:40

Bedlinen once a month ? Ours would be rancid by that point !!!

Hulababy · 04/07/2007 18:43

That is the duvet. The bottom sheet and pillow cases get changed once a fortnight, but washed monthly generally - we have spares. Duvet gets washed more frequently if it needs it. But neither me or DH are particularly sweaty people at night.

tissy · 04/07/2007 18:48

bedlinen and towels once a week (less for dd, who isn't at all sweaty). Wash at 40, though washed at 30 last week, and didn't notice the difference. As i don't use bio washing liquid, i do wonder a bit about, erm, biological stains, but not enough to do anything about it

jollyfolly · 04/07/2007 18:51

I WASH EVERYTHING AT 30 DEGREES AND NO ONE HAS TOLD ME I SMELL!? SHEETS EVERY TWO WEEKS AND TOWELS ONCE A WEEK. GOD AM PARANOID NOW THAT OUR BED LINEN STINKS AND PEOPLE ARE TO POLITE TO TELL ME!!! AM JUST OFF FOR A QUICK SNIFF.

nomdeplume · 04/07/2007 18:52

no need to shout.

jangly · 04/07/2007 18:53

I do whatever the label says. Its usually 40.

I was my bedding every other week at 60c with my towel in with it. (i figure its a double bed with only me in it so like being washed weekly!)

I wass towel inbetween at 30 or 40 depending on how dirty the rest of the stuff in the wash is.

But every 2 weeks my towel is washed at 60 and due to my dust mite allergy bedding is always washed at 60

ConnorTraceptive · 04/07/2007 19:05

Bedding every week at 60'c as anything lower won't kill bed bugs.

Towels I change twice a week but only wash at 40'c
