Industrial dehumidifier - help!

I've had a water ingress problem and been loaned a dehumidifier to dry out my home.

It's an industrial dehumidifier. I've never used one before (I'd been expecting a regular sized one). It's a bit intimidating. According to the instructions I should attach an RVD to it (I have one I use on my lawnmower) so that I don't electrocute myself. Also it says that there should be at least a meter between the machine and walls (not sure why). The room it's to be used in is quite small and my hallway next to it is also small. The only option is for it to go in my living room but I'm not sure if that's too far away. Does it need to go in the room where the problem is?

Does anyone know if it's a big deal if it's used in a small room close to walls? Thanks.

How big is the room and how big is the machine?

I've never heard of leaving a metre gap - you are supposed to leave enough space between the machine and the walls to allow the air to flow/circulate. In a small room it is recommended that you place it in the centre of the room and keep the doors and windows closed so I'm not sure how putting it in your living room will work.
Has the machine been supplied by a friend or by an insurance company? If supplied by an insurance company and it really is too big then could it be swapped for a smaller model?

It's a small room (not sure of measurements). I ran it today from the living room for a few hours and the basin had a inch of water in it afterwards. It didn't want to shut off though so I had to switch it off at the wall because it was a bit noisy and it was getting late. An acquaintance loaned me it for a few days so I'll see how it goes. Might try it in the hall tomorrow.
