How do I clean a stone hearth?

My fireplace and hearth is made of some kind of stone (I’m guessing! It was here when we moved in). It’s a light cream-ish colour and the hearth is very grubby. What’s the best way to clean it?

I use Bar keepers friend but you can use washing up liquid or stardrops. Most things really. I wash mine regularly to get rid of the sooty smell.

Do you find washing up liquid is enough to really give it a good clean? I’ve not heard of Bar Keeper’s Friend.

There is something you can get from a builders merchants, I forget what it is called but it does work. You need to protect other surfaces though. So you might be better with safer products.

Ok I’ll start with the washing up liquid. Thanks.

I give it a brush, then vacuum, then scrub. I have to watch the carpet though.
