In which room so you fold/sort clothes?

Lost count of how many loads of washing I do every week! Tumble dryer is amazing but the clothes journey from being worn to being washed and put away again is made longer by the delay post-tumble dryer. I tend to leave the nice dry clean clothes there until there is a need to shift them.

We have a utility room and my mum told me that that was originally what utility rooms were intended for, to have space to fold and put clothes in piles (not for multiple food processors!)

If I fold them in the lounge it makes a mess there and if there's any distraction they end up staying there and their journey takes longer! If I sort them in bedrooms they have to be put away before bedtime which I suppose in an incentive.

Your experiences please!

Washer and dryer are in our big upstairs bathroom, so it usually gets done directly there and dispatched to bedrooms... Sometimes the pile is as tall as DS2 before I actually get around to it though Blush

I don't have a drier so use an airer in the kitchen or hang outside in garden. I then pick each persons clothes off the airer and fold in order (2 adults, 2 DCs). This then creates a biggish folded pile in order of the person. Then taken upstairs & split into each bedroom.

I am always on top of laundry (my only organised household task!), do a load every other day with extras like bedding & clothes as well.

Does everyone tumble try their clothes? Most of my clothes are non tumble dry friendly. Do you ignore this and TD anyway? I've just got a new washer/dryer as I have a baby on the way and didn't want so many wet clothes hanging around!

They come off my airer and usually sit at the bottom of the stairs in a basket or on the kitchen table for about a week - I'm trying to get better at putting straight away but I just HATE doing it.

Zoflorabore · 06/01/2019 06:44

My dryer is in the pantry across from the kitchen so I tend to fold it all on the kitchen table and then have 2 further piles from that- to be ironed or not.

Then the to be ironed goes in my ironing pile and is ignored done as soon as possible.
One of my NY resolutions is to become more efficient in the laundry department.
It's the bane of my life and there's only 4 of us Grin

Doesn't help that the room for clothes is the spare bedroom and it's the only one that's upstairs so I don't really have any other need to go up there unless I'm going for a bath!

My tumble dryer is in the spare downstairs bedroom that is now a laundry room so they come out the drier, some are folded, some ironed and put away from there. I try not to have clothes hanging about so wash, dry, iron and put away on the same day mostly.

I'm learning here, key messages so far being fold immediately and take upstairs. DH is notorious for creating a floor-drobe out of empty wash baskets so I think the empties need to be withdrawn from bedrooms. Also realising that the problem with utility rooms is they hide clothes so I can conveniently accidentally forget about them!

tiredismymiddlename85 I think you must comply with tumble dry rules better than I do! The only things exempt from my tumble dryer are wools, anything with painted patterns or logos and occasion dresses! All baby things go in there.

@Happilyacceptingcookies - Haha probably, as I haven't had one before I'm paranoid I'll shrink everything! Baby stuff will definitely go in, so I'll probably be less careful with my stuff for ease 😁

Clothes moved from tumble dryer to spare room. Wet clothes hung on dryer in spare room. On Sunday morning I put on The Archers and take everything from spare room to our bedrrom and fold, pile, sort on the bed. Pile 1 is dumped outside Flyingboys room for him to sort. Pile2 is dumped in D
S2 room for sorting. Husband and I sort our own. I would sort in spare oom but it is small and clutterd and DH has some sport crap in there too. The spare bed also full of caravan bedding at the mo.

I do my folding on the kid's bedroom floor while the kids are drifting off (they prefer me to be around).

I only use dryer for towels but hang washing on airers in boiler room. Take one load down and fold it in kitchen on island unit. Sort into piles for each person and leave in basket at bottom of stairs. Take it up and put it away at some stage. I put a basket load away every day as otherwise it all just builds up.

Any ironing goes in a separate laundry basket which lives in the boiler room. I iron once a fortnight or so.
