How to clean cotton (rag) rugs?

What's the best way to clean cotton/rag type rugs? They are fairly large and become heavy when wet. I washed one in the bath tub in the summer and then dried it in the garden but it was quite difficult (as it got so heavy and was too big for the tub really anyway) and took ages to dry even on a hot day. So I'm wondering about doing it in the garden with the hose but the paved area isn't huge and then how to dry it in this cold weather?

Alternatively, do any of those carpet and rug cleaning services clean this type of rugs too? Or only the posh wool rugs? Ideally I'd love for them to get collected from me, cleaned, and returned clean but does such a service exist?

Either a regular launderette or one of the outdoor launderettes. They have machines which wash up to 18kg. Driers also provided. Check it can definitely be machine washed first.
