How to find out if your home smells 😂

We are clean people and I like to keep on top of cleaning. I vacuum most days, mop, clean up spills, shampoo my carpet every 2-3 months as well as regular cleaning of my soft furnishings - cushions/throws and change bedding weekly. But apparently every home has a smell and you aren’t likely to smell if if you’re used to it?! Really worried my house smells!! 😬

A month ago DS left his jacket at his Nannas house (his dads Mum). It finally came back today (apparently it had been hung up for a month) and it absolutely stinks of something. Like a stale, musty sort of smell (his Nanna is a perfectly healthy 50 something lady who is capable of cleaning). I’ve washed it and still smells.

Seems silly but I’m now supper paranoid my house smells and I don’t know it 😂😂

I'll send my mother round.. she always tells me the house smells of dogs Hmm

I think everyone's house has an individual smell.
maybe it's just me!

When we were growing up my sisters friend’s house had a particular smell, a strange, musty/fusty smell unique to that family. The friend lives in our village and her daughter is in the same school as my dd. A few weeks back my dd came home in her school uniform and as soon as she stepped into our house I knew from the smell that she had taken home the wrong cardigan. It was my sisters friends dd’s cardigan, I recognised that same smell from 30+ years ago!!

I once read that if you run up and down the stairs a few times you can smell your own house. Some reset happens that I have completely forgotten the reason for.

Google it and also try it :)

My friends tell me my house smells like our local Indian restaurant - not food but I’m always burning incense! 😂 it’s a strange compliment but I accept it as a compliment nonetheless!!

I can't quite decide if all houses have their own smell, I've been in friends houses that do & others that I haven't noticed anything. I don't think my parents house has a smell or my own house but not sure if that's because I've lived there?? My DGran's house does though, it is a smell completely of it owns to a point where I don't wear my coat if calling in as it will hit me as soon as I get home. She's got a lovely clean home so it's nothing relating to uncleanliness... I can't explain it you can't really smell it at the time either but anything that has been there comes away with 'the smell' wrapping paper on our Christmas presents even smelt of it, maybe it's just certain houses??

I've just got back from a fortnight's holiday. Now I know what my house smells like to other people.

(oil fired heating and wooden furniture)

My DP's house smells of soap. My aunt and uncle's house is similar, but always has a whiff of teenage boy from my cousins. Always has, always will.

I haven't decided on our house yet. We did building work and have only just moved back in, plus don't have pets any more. It smelled damp before. Now it's a mix of new carpet and farts (the joy of boys!).

My house smells of turkey and cheese.

It's minging but I'm working really hard to eat my way through it to make my house smell nice again. I'm very dedicated when it comes to cheese eating

I wonder how many MNers have being doing this Grin

I’m reliably informed that our smells of teenage boy and washing. Mot that I’ve been running up sand down the stairs you understand...Grin

Yes every house has a scent, some more than others though.

A combination made up of a million things, the unique smell of each person living there (body chemistry), the products they use (soap, scents and the like), things like cleaning products, laundry detergents, foods cooked, furnishing, animals etc.

Teen has showered, his bedding in in the washer and I’ve aired the house. Hopefully, it will be smelling a bit more pleasant now Smile
