Cleaning leather watchstrap

This is very gross but my leather watchstrap has started smelling vinegary Confused. Have tried cleaning it with a bicarb/water paste and also a mild solution of washing up liquid but the smell isn't shifting.

Does anyone have any other suggestions before I have to spend £25 to replace the strap? The top part is leather and the part next to the skin is suede.
