Dishwasher not leaving dishes clean

My three year old dishwasher is leaving brown flakes like sawdust on our glasses and mugs. They are clean otherwise.

I use fairy tablets, rinse aid and salt, and have cleaned the filter.

Any suggestions how I can clean the dishwasher?

Are you in a hard water area - it sounds like the sort of deposits you'd get if you get a build up of scale?
If so, have you tried running through some de-scaler?

Use a dishwasher cleaner. I do it once a month to prevent buildup but when i moved into our house (built in dishwasher was left) i had to do a couple of dishwasher cleaners in a row to get it clean.

Take out all of the racks, lift out the arm and run hot water through it making sure it goes through all holes that could be blocked, clean the filter, lift out the the wheel, wipe down underneath and clean all of the interior. Put it all back together. Run a dishwasher cleaner through to clean the pipes.

Repeat roughly once every 4-6 weeks.

I had this with a dishwasher once and it turned out to be something to do with the built in water softener. The resin, or whatever they put in the water softener, was leaking out and leaving a brown porridge like substance on the dishes. The kitchen was being replaced so we never did find out if it was repairable.

I add white vinegar to every load now

We had an older dishwasher that was fine. Then got a new kitchen and integral one. Which did the same. Utterly crap. Lots of googling said it’s newer designs PLUS they’ve recently taken something out of the d w tablets. Phosphate? Maybe? Google it
Anyway. Adding a big sploooosh means 9/10 loads are perfect
It’s only about 40p a bottle

We get this it’s burned on food. Clean the dishwasher as others have said, remove food waste from the bottom and the filters, clean th le spray arms carefully as hoes get blocked. Also possibly wash in a cooler setting?

For us rice and sweet corn block the spray jets and food waste especially from breakfast cereals cause the problems so cut out breakfast and rice/sweet corn too :)

do you use the long cycles at all?

Agree with other posters make
Sure all filters/arms/seals are cleaned. I also do a white vinegar hot wash once a week. We did find (very oddly) when ours stopped cleaning well it was in fact the dishwasher tablets- I was unaware they do actually go out of date! Just another things to check.
