How much do you pay for metered water per month?

We recently moved into a house with a water meter. When I tried to set up a direct debit they said £49 per month. That seems a lot to me for 2 adults + 2 kids who don't wash very often. We were paying about £300 a year in our old (unmetered) house. Is £49 per month reasonable or should I stick to paying for actual usage twice yearly, at least until we see how much water we're using?

Depends where in the country you are, we pay £59 per month non-metered (it’s not possible to be metered) the SW has highest water bills in the country Hmm for family of four.

We’re metered in London and paid £200 for six months March-Sept. We shower daily, washing machine on 5 times per week, had lots of paddling pool days over the summer. There are 2 adults and 2 child.

ShatnersBassoon · 21/11/2018 20:47

I happen to know this because we got a bill this morning. Our direct debit is £38 per month, but we've built up a couple of month's worth of credit so we're obviously not using much in spite of four showers a day, lots of washing etc.

We're with affinity water, and pay £72 a month Confused 2 adults, 3 children, dishwasher and washing machine used daily. But I make the kids share bathwater Grin

idea888 · 22/11/2018 20:03

Ours is Affinity and we're in London. I'm surprised there's such a big range - it sounds like they've gone with the average for our size family, and we must have been getting a good deal in the old house. I might stick with twice yearly bills for a bit until I see how much we're actually using. I suspect we have fairly low usage as never wash the car or hose the garden and normally have quick showers.

I'm with Welsh water. Our rates are very high. I was paying 700 non metered and now I'm metered I pay 33 per month. I love my meter.

schooltripwoes · 22/11/2018 20:09

I'm in the SW. We pay £70/month for 2 adults & 2 kids in a 3 bed smallish house. Kids are at the age when water use is probably at its lowest - i.e no longer in nappies (we used washables) / needing daily baths for reasons of toddler grubbiness but not yet old enough to need to bathe / shower daily.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 22/11/2018 20:11

Two adults, two teenagers quite a lot of visitors, SE, used to be GBP42 x 2 per month for water and waste water unmetered but now metered and it’s dropped to GBP72 per month.

Villanellesproudmum · 22/11/2018 20:14

Anglian water £19 a month, two people and we do wash Grin suddenly sounds very cheap!

RustyBear · 22/11/2018 20:15

We used to pay £780 a year before we got the meter. We changed to the meter a couple of years after DD and DS moved out, and realised we should have done it earlier - we’re currently paying £17 a month - it actually went down from £23 this month. DH is working away from home during the week, so it’s only 1 person during the week and 2 at weekends - I expect it’ll go up again when that comes to an end.

Pinkprincess1978 · 22/11/2018 20:15

2 adults and 2 kids, I think £24 a month, most we paid at the start was £32.

RandomMess · 22/11/2018 20:16

I moved from Thames water to up North - it's more expensive per unit up here!!!

We pay £57 per month for 3 teens and 2 adults plus a cat that will only drink from a running tap Hmm

They original had us paying £80 per month until they had 6 months worth of readings.

idea888 · 22/11/2018 20:36

RandomMess I used to have a cat like that & would find the tap still running 2 hours later - luckily we were unmetered then.

£60 a month 2 bed flat 1 Adult 1 Child. I libe in the north east. It used to be £37 a month i can't get my head around how its so much

chickywoo · 22/11/2018 20:41

Ours is £100 per quarter - 2 adults 4 kids. We didn’t have a meter when we moved here rates were about £1000 per yr! We got metre fitted, they still tried to get us to set up a direct debit of £70 a month we just said no thanks we’ll just pay on invoice. I just pay the bill online or on the phone when I get it. Unlike gas & electric - where you get a discount there is no benefit to paying water bill by direct debit

Orangepear · 22/11/2018 20:46

£30 per month, me and two small DC.

TheChineseChicken · 22/11/2018 20:50

Thames Water, £23 a month, 2 adults and a child, washing machine and dishwasher on often. Some of these monthly payments are really high!

CS12345 · 22/11/2018 21:04

£19 a month metered in the north west.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 24/11/2018 19:47

Ours is usually around the £150 mark every 6 months metered (Thames Water). Four person household all showering once (often twice) a day, washing machine, dishwasher etc etc.

LIZS · 24/11/2018 19:52

TimeToRevolutionize · 27/11/2018 23:41
