Carpet help

We've just moved and the carpets in the bedrooms are in good condition, but the last owner had a dog, so I wanted to freshen them up a bit. I got this shake 'n' vac type stuff by Vanish which seemed to do the job.

In the spare bedroom where the carpet is quite short-pile I can't smell anything now, but in our bedroom it's a fluffier carpet and I can smell the bloody stuff SO strongly. It's a "clean" smell obviously but not a nice one and it's driving me mad.

I've got the windows open all the time we're in the house, but it's getting cold, and as soon as I shut the windows the smell is back!

Thinking I'm going to have to get it shampooed properly but then what if that smells just as terrible?! Any advice would be much appreciated!

Professional shampoo won't smell.

Bicarb is good at soaking up smells, so you could try sprinkling the carpet with bicarb, leaving it over night/day then Hoover it up.
