My new washer/dryer smells awful!

I bought a washer / tumble 2 weeks ago and on the day I purchased it, i was knocked back by the smell! I've run 2 auto-cleans but it still smells awful.

I just phoned the technical service and was advised to run 2 hot washes and that should clear it but if it doesn't and an engineer comes out and decided there's no problem then I'll be charged a fee!

To be honest I just want to return it at this stage. Has anyone had this issue?

I don't want to wash my clothes as they just come out smelling really musty and it really wasn't cheap so I can't just replace it if they won't Confused

I have the same problem OP! No advice, so just following! It's terrible, thought it was my shoddy housekeeping skills but clothes immediately smell terrible.

@Stroller15 I'm just shocked at the RL responses I've had! "Oh yeah that's what mine did" etc. I'm really not prepared to just accept I'm going to smell like stagnant water all the time. It's gross!

What make is it? I"ve heard of friends with Bosch ones saying this.

Are you leaving the door open when not in use? You are supposed to do this.

I have a Miele and always leave the door open and have never had this problem. Poor you, that would stress me out!

@Growingboys it's a Hotpoint and I always leave the door open but when I took it out of the package it absolutely knocked me back! I know they do a wet run before it's delivered but I've never had this issue before.

The technical service lady asked me for the serial number but I'm at work so I don't have it. She said maybe it had been in a warehouse over the summer in the heat. I'd think that surely if something smells that bad they would understand that's not acceptable surely?

Hopeful bump?

Have you tried Dettol washing machine cleaner, it really freshens the whole machine. And I always leave the drawer and door open.

WrongKindOfFace · 09/10/2018 19:47

Bleach the fuck out of it.

Growingboys · 09/10/2018 22:00

Oh dear. I can't suggest anything I'm afraid but I would go mental at customer services and ask for your money back.

Ours does the odd rogue wash where things smell worse than when they went in and we have no idea why. It's also a new machine but a zanussi I think.

I try not to overload it, especially with thick fabric like towels and stick to those bold capsules.

ItsClemFandangoCanYouHearMe · 10/10/2018 07:19

@Disfordarkchocolate I tried that after the second autoclean as it used to bring my old machine up lovely but no joy!

I've run two 90 washes overnight and it does smell a bit better but the proof will be in the pudding when I wash some clothes. I'll be doing a lot of that today as I've been putting it off because of the smell. Fun!

Vinegar and a hot wash helped get rid of the smell in mine

totallyliterally · 10/10/2018 07:34

Vinegar and bicarb on 90 degree wash.

Spray vinegar into drum and drawer and then put bicarbonate into drum. And put fabric conditioner into drawer as normal

totallyliterally · 10/10/2018 07:34

Also check that the filter at bottom hasn't got something stuck in it like (sorry) a dead mouse from warehouse or anything

Argh the lady I just spoke with was so rude! She just booked an engineer and said I'll be charged £119 if no fault but the smell is subjective IMO. She then just tried to sell me extended warranty. It's brand new! Angry
